Job description

Calpine Corporation is America's largest generator of electricity from natural gas and geothermal resources with operations in competitive power markets. Job Summary (includes but is not limited to the following; other duties may be assigned)

Buys and sells energy, most often in the intermediate-term markets to maximize profitability while ensuring that all activities are aligned with Calpine’s portfolio strategy. Monitors variables that influence pricing, availability and reliability of power sources. Responsible for interacting with the market participants to develop, negotiate, and execute opportunistic business opportunities that create value for Calpine, which at the more senior level may include developing new products and innovative arrangements to meet customer needs. Analyzes and reacts to current market and competitive conditions. Supports the identification of surpluses and needs for capacity and energy and is responsible for analyzing and evaluating complex energy transactions to ensure that all relevant aspects including energy price, transmission, counterparty, and contractual terms are favorable to and consistent with company guidelines for risk management.

  • Little instruction on day-to-day work, general instructions on new assignments.
  • May be designated project or technical lead for an ongoing process or short-term project within own department.

Communication & Influence

  • Information sharing – gives and receives information such as options, technical direction, instruction and reporting results.

Education and Experience

  • Minimum 60 semester hours of college coursework, with an emphasis in Business, Mathematics, Applied Statistics, Accounting, Economics or equivalent; Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
  • Journey – level; typically requires 2-5 years power trading experience including general knowledge of trading tools an indices, marginal and average pricing and generation commitment techniques.
  • Strong mathematical and organizational skills and intermediate to advanced Excel/spreadsheet/database skills.
