Job Summary:Trane is seeking a Power Electronics Controls Engineer who will lead and develop key technologies to enable wider penetration of power conversion equipment on refrigeration systems. This position will involve working in state-of-the-art Laboratories with multi-disciplinary Subject Matter Experts in addition to interacting with global teams to leverage capabilities in areas of product development and application. This role is part of a global Network of Excellence whose charter is to lead the advancement of new technology adaption into various HVAC systems. The selected individual is expected to serve as a Subject Matter Expert within the area of Power Conversion globally for all of Trane Technologies.
Core Job Responsibilities (others may be added):• Lead the control algorithm development for multiple systems including motor drives, active power filters, active front end systems etc.
• Establish best practices regarding control system design, implementation and validation on software and hardware systems.
• Lead the control algorithm development using MATLAB/Simulink and support auto-code generation effort that extends to Hardware-in-Loop validation.
• Provide guidance and leadership to designers, lab technicians and other team members.
• Develop and maintain comprehensive requirements specifications for control systems and embedded software.
• Develop project plans, prioritize tasks, and provide regular project updates.
• Author lab test plans, conduct testing, analyze and interpret results and execute design updates based on the results.
• May be required to travel periodically (up to 15% domestically and 5% internationally).
Minimum Qualifications:
• Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering (with a focus on Power Electronics, Controls or Machines) and at least 2 years of work experience in Power Electronics is required.
• PhD Degree is a plus.
Key Skills or Competencies:
• In-depth understanding of AC machine theory for high-speed Induction and PM motors.
• Experience implementing closed loop motor control algorithms for high-speed machines such as Field Oriented Control, Direct Torque Control etc.
• Demonstrated capability in high performance control system development for active front end/active power filter technology.
• Strong understanding of firmware/software development as well as electronic hardware development.
• Previous experience working in application and testing of motor drives on complex electromechanical systems.
• Working/theoretical knowledge of PE systems including - DC/DC converters, battery management and magnetic bearing systems is desired.
• Experience with Hardware in Loop (HIL) based platforms such as Opal-RT, Speedgoat, Typhoon is desired.
• Full-cycle product development experience from concept development to manufacturing readiness and field trials is desired.
• Ability to work in a laboratory environment, author test plans, coordinate testing with lab staff and reviewing results.
• Must be adept at report writing and presenting technical information to a wide audience.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills required with good interpersonal skills, able to express concepts and ideas with clarity.
Annual Compensation Range is $58,000 to $125,000 annually. Disclaimer: This salary range is based on US national averages. Actual pay could be a result of seniority/experience level, merit and geographic location where the actual work is performed.
