Form of workExciting opportunity to work as a post-doctoral fellow in the laboratory of Dr. Imtiaz A Khan in the department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Tropical Medicine at George Washington University. Dr. Khan, a well-funded parasite immunologist who has done pioneering research in the field of CD8 T cell memory, was one of the first to investigate CD8 T cell exhaustion in a non-viral model. Recently, our research team has demonstrated that CD8 T cell exhaustion is a consequence of CD4 T cell dysfunctionality. Unpublished data from the laboratory suggests that early events after infection elicit CD8 T cell exhaustion. Building on these interesting findings, the project funded by a new NIH grant will investigate the early imprinting/programming of exhaustion in CD4 and CD8 memory T cell subsets during latent Toxoplasma gondii infection. This study will use state-of-the-art techniques, including single-cell RNA sequencing and 15+ colors flow cytometry. The research in the laboratory has led to several publications in high-impact journals. The position offers a unique opportunity to gain experience in cutting-edge immunological techniques which will enable the candidate to build a strong career in the field.
