Description:
A postdoctoral position is open in Tulane's Department of Tropical Medicine and Infectious Disease. This postdoctoral researcher will support ongoing studies of parasites and other pathogens using molecular epidemiology and comparative functional genomics.
Postdoctoral researcher is an individual holding a doctoral degree who is engaged in a temporary period of mentored research and/or scholarship training for the purpose of acquiring the professional skills needed to pursue a career path of his or her choosing. The position will require work between the laboratories of Dr. Blanton and the Dumonteil-Herrera lab with approximately 50% effort for each. Much of the activities will be joint between the laboratories. Dr. Dumonteil will be responsible for post-doc’s evaluation.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Recent PhD graduate within the last three years with a degree in microbiology, molecular ecology, or a related field.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES TYPICALLY NEEDED TO PERFORM THIS JOBS SUCCESSFULLY:
• Experience in microbiology, molecular biology and next generation sequencing techniques
• Experience with computational methods for sequence data analysis
• Strong oral and written communication skills
• History of publishing in peer-reviewed journals
• Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
• Skilled at prioritizing competing demands, and working on multiple projects
• Ability to work independently on a wide range of tasks and in different roles
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Experience teaching scientific computing skills
• Demonstrated successful mentorship of graduate-level trainees
• Proficiency with common bioinformatics programming languages such as R or Python
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:
Research and Data Analysis 30%
• Perform both independent and collaborative research under the mentorship of principal researchers to:
• Design and perform experiments
• Develop and execute research techniques and protocols
• Analyze and summarize data
• Contribute to components of larger projects, through experimental design, execution and/or analysis
Research Reports, Manuscript and Grant writing 20%
• Prepare publications of research findings as co-author
• Assist in writing grant proposals
• Develop posters and oral presentations
• Participate in and contribute to weekly group meetings
Departmental Programs in Sequence and Data Analysis Development 15%
• Participate in existing departmental course seminars and lab activities that focus on scientific computing
• Organize and facilitate trainee-led seminars, journal clubs, practical workshops, and peer code review
• Create and maintain associations with computing resources within the university (Cypress HPCS, Department of Division of Bioinformatics & Genomics, Department of Biostatistics and Data Science, Department of Environmental Health Sciences) and outside of the university (UC Davis Data Sciences Initiative, Software Carpentry)
Training 10%
• Assist in scientific, technical, and safety training of staff and students
• Supervise and mentor trainees in research projects as appropriate
Laboratory and Computer Management 20%
• Oversee laboratory maintenance, inventory and safety
• Contribute to organization and best practices for data storage and management, as well as computer maintenance
Performs other duties as requested or required, whether specifically mentioned in this job description 5%
