Experience and Education

Associate degree in Nursing required.  Bachelor's degree in nursing preferred. Current Texas RN (or BNE Compact State) license required.  Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, course accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) required. 3-4 years of Medical/Surgical or Intensive Care experience. 

Job Duties

       Collects relevant clinical data using a systematic and continuous process. Interprets tests and procedures based on established evidence-based standard of care.

       Anticipates patient's and/or patient's family's expectations and needs and utilizes them in conjunction with assessment to develop appropriate plan of care for patient.

       Maintains and utilizes competencies per unit expectations. Synthesizes data and patient information relevant to organ specific transplantation. Utilizes critical thinking skills in planning and prioritizing nursing care.

       Identifies and implements appropriate nursing interventions based on assessment. Completes documentation of interventions. Coordinates interdisciplinary plan of care. Communicates plan of care with family, patient and transplant team members.

       Prioritizes nursing interventions based upon assessment. Identifies changes in condition as evidenced by assessment, labs, x-rays, etc. Reports changes and takes follow-up action as appropriate.

       Evaluates effectiveness of planned strategies in relation to the patient's attainment of expected outcomes. Uses ongoing assessment data to revise the plan of care and expected outcomes. Documents interventions and modifications to plan of care.

       Adheres to appropriate policies, procedures, clinical pathways, and nationally accepted standards of nursing practice while delivering care to patients. Suggests practices to enhance nursing care based on current literature and research.

       Provides transplant specific health teaching that addresses patient self-monitoring and promotes self-care. Completes documentation of all education provided. Obtains feedback and evaluation of understanding from patient and family. Demonstrates effective communication with children, adolescents, adults, and older adults.

       Describes/maintains compliance with transplant regulatory policies related to organ allocation, candidate listing, and ABO and UNOS ID verification for living donors and/or recipients. Advocates for the patient's medical and legal rights and promotes the informed consent process.

       Responds to patient's and/or family's complaints in appropriate & effective manner. Reports complaints to Clinical Nurse Manager or designee in timely manner. Utilizes chain of command to resolve issues. Serves as advocate to patient and family.

       Participates in QA/PI activities as directed. Attends at least 80% of scheduled staff meetings and 100% of mandatory educational sessions.

       Performs other duties as assigned.
