Job description

Overview
At a time when complex environmental problems are emerging on every front, the Nuclear Sciences Division's staff, capabilities, and facilities are delivering science and technology innovations for the environment, as well as for energy and national security needs. Our diverse work addresses a wide range of national and international challenges, from providing solutions that protect the health of people who must work in hazardous environments, to developing durable new materials, streamlining industrial processes for improved productivity and effectiveness, and delivering new approaches for environmental cleanup. Nuclear Sciences Division capabilities and efforts are focused in three key areas including Environmental Health and Remediation, Nuclear Regulatory, and Nuclear Energy.
The Radiological Materials (RM) Group, a part of PNNL's Nuclear Sciences Division, is seeking a Post-Bachelor Research Associate with a background in computer and/or data science. This position would help develop software to assist with nuclear waste form development research and apply machine learning and optimization to topic areas related to nuclear waste storage and disposal.
Why should I apply? PNNL's RM Group is a top group in the nation performing research pertaining to predictive glass property models based on composition. With access to state-of-the-art equipment and leading experts in fields related to glass science, this is a unique opportunity for applicants interested in computational science as it relates to nuclear and chemical engineering.
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be working with research scientists to study various aspects of (simulated) nuclear waste form design. The focus will be on developing tools/software to improve waste glass database management and maintenance, developing machine learning models to predict various waste glass properties, developing programming codes to accelerate data analysis and treatments. Data interpretation, presentation, and documentation are important requirements for the work. Individual may also participate in lab work related to the collection of data for waste form design. This position is to support ORP projects.
Qualifications

  • Hold a bachelor's degree in computer science or data science.
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Have experience with data management, user-interface developments, programing languages (e.g., Python), machine learning libraries (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch, sklearn), and optimization packages (e.g., Gekko, CasADi).
  • Have proficiency in Python, and more specifically experience with one or more associated data analysis tools (e.g., pandas), machine learning libraries (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch, sklearn) and optimization packages (e.g., Gekko, CasADi).
  • Experience developing machine learning models.
  • Knowledge of glass formulation strategies for nuclear waste vitrification, expertise of the role those components play in the vitrification matrix, and modeling of glass component specific effects.

Hazardous Working Conditions/Environment
  • Laboratory work may result in exposure to potentially hazardous chemicals.
  • Projects involving laboratory work will be located at PNNL's Richland, WA campus.
