Job description

Overview
At a time when complex environmental problems are emerging on every front, the Nuclear Sciences Division's staff, capabilities, and facilities are delivering science and technology innovations for the environment, as well as for energy and national security needs. Our diverse work addresses a wide range of national and international challenges, from providing solutions that protect the health of people who must work in hazardous environments, to developing durable new materials, streamlining industrial processes for improved productivity and effectiveness, and delivering new approaches for environmental cleanup. Nuclear Sciences Division capabilities and efforts are focused in three key areas including Environmental Health and Remediation, Nuclear Regulatory, and Nuclear Energy.

Radioactive tracers will be used, and much of the work will be with radiological samples. The candidate will assist with radiological counting of samples, such as liquid scintillation counting, total alpha/beta, alpha energy analysis, and gamma energy analysis. The successful candidate will initially work with close supervision by senior scientists, and it is expected that within a few months they will be able to perform experiments and tests with little direct supervision and prioritize their work activities. The successful candidate is expected to complete bench sheets and record bench notes, including pipet and balance performance checks, quantities of samples, reagents and tracers used, and any observations such as formation of precipitates or suspensions, gas evolution, etc. The successful candidate will be expected to work to high quality control/assurance standards, to organize the data in spreadsheets and text documents, and communicate the results to the project team, including the cognizant scientist and project manager.
