Full Range: $18.23 - $24.61 Per Hour
 
Salary offers are based on the candidate's equivalent experience and internal equity with other employees within the same job classification.    
Supervises staff and swimming pool activities, maintains order, and safeguards the lives of persons at a swimming pool. This is distinguished from the Lifeguard II and Lifeguard I classifications by its additional supervisory responsibilities.

Duties/Responsibilities

(Work assignments may vary depending on the department's needs and will be communicated to the applicant or incumbent by the supervisor.)
Supervises pool activities and recreation personnel;
Rescues swimmers who are in danger of drowning;
Administers first aid and Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR);
Prepares and monitors work schedules of lifeguards to ensure uninterrupted pool coverage;
Assists in recruitment and testing of new lifeguards and provides recommendations on selection of guards;
Trains new lifeguards;
Conducts swimming lessons in accordance with Starfish Aquatics Institute methods and procedures;
Monitors pool maintenance, sanitation, chemical balance and performs pool water testing;
Collects, reviews, and submits various records, logs and reports to supervisor.
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
Knowledge of:

  • life saving and swimming instruction principles and practices; 
  • first aid.

Skill in:
  • supervising the work of others; 
  • performing lifesaving functions including rescue and CPR;
  • enforcing regulations firmly, tactfully and impartially; 
  • preventing dangerous situations from arising, recognizing emergencies and taking action;
  •  teaching swimming and lifesaving methods;
  •  communicating effectively, both orally and in writing; 
  • · basic arithmetic functions.

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of American Red Cross lifeguarding certification and either Starfish Aquatics InstituteStarfish Swimming certification (SSI) or American Red Cross Water Safety Instruction (WSI), plus one season (60 day/season) of experience as a Lifeguard. 
(Required experience does not have to be American Red Cross.)

Selection Procedure:
Pima County Human Resources Department reserves the right to admit to the selection process only those candidates that meet the minimum/desired qualifications. All applications will be assessed based on an evaluation of the listed education and experience. Candidates meeting the minimum/desired qualifications may be further evaluated/scored against any advertised Preferred Qualifications. The hiring authority will interview and select the successful candidates from a referral list provided by Human Resources. Additional assessments/testing may be required as part of the selection process.   

Supplemental Information

Licenses and Certificates: When only American Red Cross WSI certification is held, then Starfish Aquatics Institute-Starfish swimming certification (SSI) is required within six months of appointment. First Aid, Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) and CPR for the Professional Rescuer must be included as part of the lifeguard certification. Some positions require a valid Arizona Class D driver license at the time of application. Some positions require a Pool Operator license at the time of application. Failure to obtain/maintain the required licensure/certification/registration shall be grounds for termination. Special Notice Items: Applicants must be at least 15 years of age, or older at time of application and must be 16 years of age on or before date of appointment. As a condition of employment or continued employment, positions within this classification may be required to submit to a criminal history background check with state and federal agencies pursuant to A.R.S. 41-1750 and Public Law 92-544.
