Job description

Position Summary

The Polysomnographic Tech I administer testing for diagnosis and treatment of sleep apnea and related disorders, scores the sleep study for physician interpretation and schedules patients for sleep evaluations.  Must demonstrate proficiency in a wide range of sleep testing procedures.  The Polysomnographic Tech I is also responsible for maintaining sleep laboratory regarding calibration of equipment and inventory.

Essential Functions

  • Works closely with the Health Care Team.
  • Performs and evaluates the technical validity of overnight sleep studies, nocturnal pulse oximetry, and other related studies. 
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span of the assigned patient population.  Assesses and interprets patient age specific data and provides appropriate, age specific treatment.
  • Performs testing preparation procedures. 
  • Gather and analyze patient information.
  • Sets up and applies polysomnographic monitoring devices, ensuring patient safety and accurate test results.
  • Make patient rounds regularly.  Observe patient, check equipment, change and make adjustments as necessary.
  • Assists with scoring sleep/wake stages.
  • Provides summary analysis/reports of all polysomnographic studies for physician review.
  • Instructs patient in the home use of therapeutic devices per physician’s orders.
  • Must obtain CEU’s to maintain license.
  • Attends the monthly staff meetings and offers into the overall plan of cardiopulmonary service.
  • Demonstrates positive guest relation skills and professional behavior in dealing with all hospital contacts.  Demonstrates commitment to professionalism.  Maintains an open mind in dealing with any situation.

Reporting Relationships

Reports to:  Cardiopulmonary Manager

Supervises:  Gives general direction to Sleep Lab Tech Trainees.

Qualifications

  • Successful completion of a polysomnography program associated with a state licensed and/or nationally accredited educational facility and a minimum of six months experience as a Sleep Lab Tech Trainee OR holds a current Pennsylvania State License in Respiratory, Nursing, Electroneurodiagnostics, Emergency Medical Tech (EMT), Physician Assistant, or be an MD, DO, or DC, and have at least 1 year experience in polysomnography testing and scoring. 
  • Previous experience in respiratory therapy preferred. 
  • Certified in basic CPR course C. 
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and appropriate social skills.

Working Conditions

Subject to hazards of flammable gasses.  May be exposed to infectious agents including blood-borne pathogens.
