We're seeking a Police Records Technician to play a crucial role in processing and maintaining police department records. In this position, you will respond to information requests from municipal and district courts and the public in accordance with the Colorado Open Records Act (CORA). This isn't merely a clerical role-you'll be a vital part of our mission to reduce crime and enhance the quality of life in Durango.
The Durango Police Department trains, educates, and invests in our team members at every level of our organization. Upon employment, we will facilitate your certification in Colorado Open Records Act (CORA), CCIC/NCIC Criminal Justice information Computer systems Access and Certification, National Incident Based Reporting System (NIBRS) and Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training.

What You'll Do in This Role:

  • Query Colorado and National Crime Information Center (CCIC/NCIC) databases for arrest warrants, stolen property, missing persons, and other sensitive law enforcement information.

  • Compile, edit, and file various Police Records, including incident and arrest reports, citations, memos, financial reports, crime analysis materials, and more.

  • Respond to open records requests, redacting information in compliance with the Colorado Open Records Act.

  • Maintain accurate statistics for the National Incident Based Reporting System.

  • Audit and enhance the department's recordkeeping and information sharing practices to improve the quality of local crime analysis and investigations.

  • Assist department personnel and the public with record checks, fee collection, and dissemination of reports and department policies.

  • Compile and summarize police record data, including serious crime offenses, stolen vehicles, crime reports, and booking sheets, as well as statistical and financial reports.

  • Answer non-emergency calls and assist the public at the front window.

You Have:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.

  • Minimum of two years of general clerical experience. Law enforcement setting preferred.

  • Proficiency in records management and data entry, including tracking and conducting record searches via specialized software or self-created forms and databases.

  • Strong communication skills for written and verbal correspondence, as well as public interaction and information dissemination.

  • Skilled in using Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with modern office procedures and equipment.

  • Understanding of business letter writing and basic report preparation techniques.
