Job description

An employee in this job class is responsible for performing technical work of routine difficulty in processing fingerprints. Employees work directly for the Supervisor of the Fingerprint Unit. Work involves the processing of ink rolled or digitally produced fingerprints and the maintenance of fingerprint record files. Work is reviewed for accuracy, adherence to established policies and procedures, and for rate of performance.

Duty Hours: The Fingerprint Unit is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Rotating - Optional 8 or 10 HOUR SHIFTS:

8 HOUR SHIFTS, 5 days a week: 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM, 2:00 PM to 10:30 PM, 10:00 PM to 6:30 AM.

10 HOUR SHIFTS, 4 days a week: 4:00 AM to 2:00 PM, 2:00 PM to 12:00 AM, 8:00 PM to 6:00 AM.

(May be adjusted to meet Department needs.)


Position will remain open until filled.


Per the Department's Collective Bargaining Agreement, newly hired employees who do not possess corresponding experience will start at the base starting pay listed in this posting.


  • Conduct computer-aided fingerprint search of individuals arrested in the County from ink rolled or digitally produced fingerprints, conducts fingerprint searches for licensed private security, CCW applicants and police personnel.
  • Maintain detailed criminal fingerprint file and criminal record to aid in identification of arrested individuals.
  • Complete information cards on arrested individuals for state and federal agency use.
  • Respond to telephone, FAX and walk-in information requests.
  • Work a rotating schedule with other employees to provide continuous, 24-hour on-site services.
  • Process ink rolled fingerprints from cadavers for the purpose of forensic identification.
  • Provide competent testimony in court of law or responds in depositions on matters relating to fingerprint identification and work performed.
  • Process incoming mail, routine filing or office duties as assigned or necessary.
  • Roll inked or Livescan fingerprint impressions of individuals as necessary/requested.
  • Conduct computer-aided latent fingerprint searches through AFIS and NGI as permitted.
  • Properly perform chain of custody evidence procedures.
  • Assist Latent Fingerprint Examiners as needed.
  • Perform related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of AFIS Certification.
  • Knowledge of Livescan Certification.
  • Knowledge of fingerprint interpretation.
  • Knowledge of the operation of the AFIS system, Livescan and IJMS.
  • Ability to use standard office equipment, telephone and fax machine.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationship with co-workers and officers.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and prepare precise reports as necessary.
  • Skill in classifying individual fingerprint impressions according to specific fingerprint pattern types.
  • Ability to maintain restricted or confidential records and files and maintain the information in a professional manner.
  • Ability to work with or around petrochemicals or materials that may be respiratory irritants.
  • Tasks require employees to sit for extended periods of time, operate mechanical card filing systems, lift and move file drawers weighing approximately 28 lbs.
  • Knowledge of State statutes as they pertain to criminal records.
  • Duties require individual eye vision acuity necessary to routinely work with handheld and electric optical magnification equipment.
  • Ability to work at extremely detailed tasks with minimal direct supervision.

Training and Experience:


Must have graduated from high school or possess GED. Preferred experience as a Fingerprint Technician or prior fingerprint processing experience. A working knowledge of fingerprint classification and interpretation is preferred.

CITIZENSHIP: Citizen of the United States or valid work permit, and apply for citizenship when eligible.
AGE LIMITS: Eighteen (18) years of age at the time of appointment.
EDUCATION: Educational requirements and skills will be determined by the position classification.
ARREST: Must be free from conviction of a felony or a Class "A" misdemeanor.
MILITARY: Must not have a "Dishonorable" discharge or "Bad Conduct" discharge if having served in the military. All "Other Than Honorable" discharges will be reviewed on an individual basis.
