POLICE EVIDENCE SPECIALIST I, SR-16
Summary of Duties:
Under the direct supervision of an experienced Police Evidence Specialist, this position will receive orientation in and learn the basic functions, principles, concepts, work processes, methods, techniques, and reference materials used in the Scientific Investigation Section; and assist at crime scenes or with processing of case subjects. The incumbent may testify in court proceedings regarding work performed.Example of Duties:
- Learns and assists with: searching, identifying, and recovering physical evidence from crime scenes; and marking, preserving, packaging, and securing recovered evidence. Learns the selection of appropriate personal protective equipment when handling hazardous evidence (e.g. gloves, eye protection, respirators, safety clothing, etc.) and assists with preparing it appropriately for transfer (e.g. rendering weapons safe, choosing appropriate containers, safety labeling). Learns and assists with preparing evidence reports and maintaining chain-of-custody requirements.
- Learns and assists with: preparing reports to document the crime scene and evidence recovered; and preparing diagrams using the measurements taken from the crime scene and drafting software. Inputs data, information, and documents into departmental and SIS record management systems.
- Learns and assists with taking measurements, notes, and simple sketches to document the crime scene, including placement of physical evidence.
- Learns and assists with taking digital photographs of crime scenes, latent prints, evidence, and case subjects under standard and sub-optimal conditions (e.g. low light, bright light, confined spaces, adverse weather, etc.).
- Learns and assists with recovering latent prints from crime scenes and evidence using dusting, chemical, lifting, and photographic techniques.
