Whether it's a scorpion sting, medication question, first aid advice or potential poisoning, the Banner Poison & Drug Information Center in Phoenix, Arizona is available 24/7 with comprehensive resources and services. Our AAPCC-certified poison center is a large and active center serving Maricopa county's population of greater than 4 million residents. BPDIC is located on the campus of Banner University Medical Center - Phoenix, a Magnet hospital and "Best Hospital" recognition in U.S. News and World Report. Our center is associated with an active inpatient toxicology service and fellowship program and participates with training nursing, pharmacy, and medical students. This position is responsible for direct care and triage concerning poison exposures received via a 24-hour emergency telephone line. The incumbent triages and provides accurate and complete management information directly to the public, physicians, nurses, pharmacists, emergency medical personnel, and other health care providers. When a poison exposure has occurred, makes a toxicological assessment, recommends a treatment plan, and provides necessary documentation and follow up to ensure a positive outcome.
This is a full time, day shift, 36 hr/week. 3 -12 hr shifts, 10a-10:30p with every other weekend, providing patient care through telehealth, onsite position at Poison Center. POSITION SUMMARY
This position responds to phone calls related to poisoning, drug identification and information, referrals, under the direct supervision of designated certified health professionals in the Poison Center. This includes follow-up calls on poison exposures, as well as providing poison prevention education to callers and other appropriate tasks
CORE FUNCTIONS
1. Responds to phone calls under the direct supervision of a designated certified health professional. Complies with all Poison Center policies, procedures, and treatment guidelines with referral of all calls outside the scope of their position to the professional..
2. Coordinates calls such as requests for drug/medication identification and information, poison and poison prevention information, lower acuity poisoning calls such as uncomplicated bites and stings, and designated calls received on county health department lines or the Post Exposure Prevention line.
3. Uses clinical judgment to appropriately evaluate, provide information or treatment recommendations to caller, and reassess and refer caller to the professional, as necessary.
4. Provides poison prevention education to callers by telephone and/or written poison prevention materials.
5. Provides follow-up as appropriate to callers after a poison exposure as directed by a professional.
6. Maintains accurate and complete documentation of each call in the data collection system.
7. This position deals with a wide variety of internal and external customers, including adults of all ages, young children, teenagers, school representatives, physicians, nurses, pharmacists, paramedics and news media representatives. The calls managed in this position include drug and Poison Information questions, minor human exposure calls, and provision of follow-up contact as directed. The Poison Center is responsible for providing drug information and poison center services to all the citizens of the service area who contact the Center.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of pharmacology, toxicology and/or medical terminology as normally acquired through the completion of an Associates degree.
Two years of health care field experience required. Must be fluent in usage and understanding of basic medical terminology
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Additional related education and/or experience preferred.
