Job description

GLP Services is looking for an experienced Plant Equipment Operator to join our team at our Plainfield Renewable Energy plant located in Plainfield, CT.

GENERAL SUMMARY

The Plant Equipment Operator is responsible for the effective, efficient, and safe operation of the power plant and its auxiliary systems and equipment. The job duties listed are typical examples of the work performed by positions in this job classification. Not all duties assigned to every position are included.

PRIMARY DUTIES

  • Starts, stops, operates and troubleshoots all power plant and auxiliary systems and
  • equipment, including:
  • Boiler air and gas fans, gearboxes, motors, dampers, ducts, controls, etc.
  • Boiler feed pumps, gearboxes, motors, valves, piping, controls, etc.
  • Boiler fuel feed conveyors, screws, feeders, gearboxes, motors, controls, etc.
  • Boiler ash removal collectors, conveyors, feeders, motors, controls, urea injections etc.
  • Boiler emissions control systems, lime feeders, urea injection, gearboxes, motors, valves,
  • piping, controls, etc.
  • Turbine, exciter, and generator cooling and lubrication pumps, gearboxes,
  • motors, valves, piping, controls, etc.
  • Storm water treatment pumps, motors, pipes, valves, controls, etc.
  • Plant instrument and service air, electrical, and water distribution systems.
  • Makes periodic inspections (rounds) to ensure that all systems, equipment, machinery, and
  • controls are operating properly and are in good condition
  • Lubricates, makes minor repairs as needed to maintain good operating condition and adjusts equipment, machinery, and controls
  • Analyzes boiler, cooling, blow down water samples and adjusts water chemistry as
  • needed
  • Identifies, troubleshoots, and reports systems, equipment, and machinery malfunctions to plant maintenance personnel for repair or replacement
  • De-energizes, isolates, locks out, tags and prepares systems, equipment, and machinery for maintenance
  • Maintains equipment and machinery in good order including cleaning and painting as necessary
  • Collects and removes fuel, ash, and debris from power plant buildings and structures
  • Attends safety meetings and training programs and participates in plant safety
  • programs as required
  • Performs other duties as assigned and directed by Control Room Operator and plant management team

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY

The Plant Equipment Operator role is an individual contributor role and does not manage staff. This position is an integral part of a four (4) person crew, which requires collaboration and strong communication skills.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

The Plaint Equipment Operator reports to the Operations Manager and may also take direction from Control Room Operators and other members of the plant management team.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Ability to be fitted with a full-faced respirator or ability to use a self-contained breathing apparatus.
  • Ability to drive company vehicles and possess at valid driver’s license
  • Ability to learn new skills and knowledge
  • Ability to perceive depth
  • Ability to work from sky climbers and scaffolding
  • Must be able to detect abnormal plant conditions (i.e. sight, hearing, smell or touch)
  • Must be able to distinguish colors
  • Must be able to interface effectively with plant personnel
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs. and up to 75 lbs. occasionally
  • Must be able to lift and carry heavy objects (like rigging equipment)
  • Must be able to push and pull **
  • Must be able to work in confined spaces and elevated areas **
  • Must be able to work on feet for extended periods including climbing stairs **
  • Must be capable of using protective equipment such as hard hats, safety glasses/goggles, safety shoes, hearing protection, respiratory protection equipment in the performance of job duties **
  • Must have the ability to reach and stretch, including reaching and working overhead **
  • Be able to stoop, bend, kneel, crouch and crawl **
  • Requires the ability to climb stairs and ladders in order to work on the boiler and other plant structures. Must be able to work from heights and if necessary use safety harnesses **
  • Requires the ability to utilize a computer, mouse and keyboard **
  • The Plant Equipment Operator requires remaining alert while working on rotating 12 hour shifts including nights, weekends and holiday work as required by schedules, workload and plant conditions. Timely response to callouts is expected. Hours may extend beyond 12 hours during plant outages and upsets. **
  • The Plant Equipment Operators may be exposed to vibration, moving mechanical parts and loud noises **
  • The Plant Equipment Operators must be able to work in extreme temperatures and will be exposed to heat, cold, wind, rain, dust, confined spaces, elevated areas, dirt, ash particles and fuel particles **
  • The Plant Operator must be able to climb at least 50 feet of rung ladder to access scaffolding, platforms, and other operational positions; must be able to climb stairs and ladders (multiple levels) to elevations of 100+ feet in order to work on boiler and other plant standings. At high elevations may include the use of fall protection gear. **
  • Working with hazardous materials may be required **

  • Working experience and experience in power plants, along with equipment experience.
  • Experience working on a team and the ability to collaborate with others
  • Ability to respond calmly to emergent situations
  • Must possess strong interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions
  • Strong trouble-shooting and analytical skills in order to solve problems of both a technical and operational nature
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to effectively communicate with individuals at various levels at the plant
  • Basic computer skills
  • Minimum High School Diploma or equivalent
