Job description

Essential Responsibilities
  • Begin developing subject matter expertise on all matters related to coal and the performance of the plant
  • Be a point of contact for both plant and mine personnel for technical assistance regarding coal and the performance of the plant
  • Fuels and boiler performance engineering
  • Make recommendations to both plant and mine personnel based on:
  • Ash coloration and quality
  • Coal handling equipment adjustments and performance
  • Coal quality/chemical makeup data
  • Strategic planning for coal mining and timing of deliveries
  • Strategic planning for long-term boiler cleanliness and performance
  • Applicable machine repair and overhaul scheduling
  • Monitor and react on a real-time basis to changes in coal quality/chemical makeup
  • Liaise, provide a channel of open communication, and maintain a close working relationship with mine personnel
  • Participate in studies with respect to boiler performance and coal quality/chemical makeup
  • Assist with evaluating and test equipment
  • Review systems to improve efficiency, reliability, availability, load factor, durations between wash outages, fuel oil consumption, and combustion performance and efficiency
  • Identify areas of improvement that reduce total cost of ownership
  • Hold plant and mine personnel accountable for actions taken that hinder plant performance
  • Track/monitor/record applicable material/machinery histories to accomplish duties described
  • Consider and make recommendations for alternative sources or types of fuel, including studies on logistics and financial impacts

  • Provide day-to-day guidance to operations and maintenance personnel
  • Provide technical expertise in areas causing problems to operations
  • Provide assistance under emergency conditions for repair of vital equipment
  • Maintain all qualifications necessary to traverse the haul road between the mine and plant

    Goals and Objectives
     An employee filling this role is expected to meet changing and unique goals and objectives, as established by their supervisor, related to the broader area in which the employee is assigned.
    Job Qualification Standards
    A Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited university and EIT certification is preferred. Related working experience is highly preferred, but not necessary. Must maintain a valid driver’s license.

    Physical demands:  While performing the duties of this position, the incumbent is primarily required to sit, stand, walk, stoop, bend and frequently utilize a keyboard/computer. Specific vision abilities include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
    Mental demands: While performing the duties of this position, the incumbent will be required to problem solve, read, write and analyze data, work under schedules and deadline pressure, present information to others, work independently and use discretion and judgment for confidential or sensitive projects/issues.
    Work Environment: While performing the duties of this position, the employee is exposed to an office environment indoors, and will travel outdoors to multiple locations dependent on work.
