Job description

Augusta Richmond County is currently recruiting for Plans Examiner.
Under direction of the Building Official, examines plans, and specifications for multi-family commercial, and industrial buildings or structures for compliance with applicable City and State codes and standards. Prepares detailed plan correction reports, confer and coordinate plan review process and code requirements with architects, engineers, contractors, and owner / builders. Receives general administrative direction from Building Official and Senior Plan Examiners.

  • Reviews plans, designs, calculations, and specifications for residential, commercial, and industrial structures for compliance with applicable adopted codes and standards, accepted engineering practices, and structural integrity. Notifies contractors, engineers, architects, and property owners of plan deficiencies and alternate solutions.
  • Maintains a plan routing and filing system.
  • Performs field inspection and consultation as required to assist Building Inspectors, contractors, or applicants with construction questions or issues.
  • Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.
Education: High school diploma or G.E.D.
Licensing:
Must possess a valid driver's license with good driving history. If State license is other than Georgia or South Carolina, applicant must obtain a license in Georgia or South Carolina within 30 days of employment.
Hiring grade is based on experience and certifications as outlined below. All applicants will be considered for grade 19. A higher entry level salary grade could be warranted depending on years of experience and ICC certifications.
Plans Examiner I
Certification: Three (3) ICC Certifications to include certification as a Building Inspector and Building Plans Examiner from the Commercial Codes.
Experience: Five (5) years of experience in building code compliance, reading/examining building plans, or construction technology.
Plans Examiner II
Certification: Four (4) ICC Certifications from the Commercial Codes with two (2) of the certifications being in commercial plans examination
Experience: Seven (7) years of experience in building code compliance, reading/examining building plans, or construction technology.PERFORMANCE APTITUDES:

  • Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to apply principles of influence systems, such as motivation, incentive, and leadership, and to exercise independent judgment to apply facts and principles for developing approaches and techniques to resolve problems.
  • Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving the evaluation of information against sensory, judgmental, or subjective criteria, as opposed to that which is clearly measurable or verifiable.
  • Physical Abilities: Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-10 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation.
  • Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
  • Environmental Factors: Essential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
