Pay Range
$5,380 / $7,372 Monthly
Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.
Job Description
We have an opening for a student intern to participate in projects determining the abundance and properties of black holes in the Galaxy. As part of a multi-disciplinary team within the Physics Division, you will use theory and computer simulations to translate optical time-domain astronomy observations into model constraints.
You will
  • Contribute to project analysis that determines the abundance and properties of black holes in the Galaxy through gravitational microlensing and gravitational wave astronomical observations and determines implications for dark matter and early universe physics.
  • Analyze simulations and/or astronomical data.
  • Prepare progress reports and presentations to supervisor/mentor and project teams.
  • Publish research results in external peer-reviewed scientific journals.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • BS in Physics, Astronomy, Computer Science, Mathematics, or in a related field.
  • Experience performing astronomical simulation and data analysis, or closely related activities.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to communicate technical information effectively with technicians, peers, and managers.
  • Experience in writing codes to collect and analyze data.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to work in a collaborative research environment and interact with a diverse set of scientists and administrative staff.

Qualifications We Desire
  • Proficiency in Python.
  • Familiarity with black hole science, especially primordial black holes.
  • Experience with massively parallel computing.
