Overview:
Provide healthcare services for Mercy Orthopedic Clinics under the direction of a designated physician(s). The incumbent has direct patient contact primarily for the evaluation and management of medical and musculoskeletal pathology. The incumbent is considered the primary sports medicine liaison and must perform many of the outlined tasks with minimal or no supervision in the clinical setting and in the field. Problems encountered are of a high level of complexity and a considerable amount of creativity, resourcefulness, and innovation are utilized in problem solving. Coordination of patient care services with other health care providers is essential. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the use of relevant medical terminology, are essential. In addition to direct patient care, the incumbent would be responsible for one or all of the following: clinic pre-visit planning, coordination of care and patient triage. A wide variety of internal and external contact relationships are involved in performance of the duties of this position, and a high degree of independence in creating and enhancing these relationships is expected. Internal contact include but are not limited to other members of the sports medicine and physical therapy staff, physicians, surgical schedulers, onsite and offsite scheduling staff, nursing personnel, exercise physiology staff, preventive cardiology staff, radiology staff, public relations personnel, legal counsel, and a variety of clerical staff. External contacts include but are not limited to physicians, athletic trainers, and physical therapists from other institutions, academic athletic training programs, patient and/or athlete family members, coaches, athletic directors, equipment vendors, case managers and insurance representatives. A strong clinical and organizational background is necessary.
Qualifications:
  • Education: Bachelors Degree in either athletic training, physical therapy, physical therapy assistant, registered nurse or healthcare related field.
  • Licensure: Missouri Licensure or eligible for athletic training, physical therapy, or nursing
  • Certifications: Mercy Health System approved Professional Rescuer CPR
  • Other: Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities: This individual must be trained and capable of performing patient care and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patients status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patients requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed.
  • Working Conditions, Mental and Physical Requirements: Clinical and/or Outreach sports medicine settings. The individual must be very adaptable and willing to work occasional odd hours. There will be evening and weekend work and travel required throughout the year.
  • Equipment Used: Therapeutic Modalities, Thermal and Electric Modalities, Computer, Dictaphone, Cellular Phone, Therapeutic Equipment.
  • Preferred Education: Have a Bachelors degree and certification by the National Athletic Trainers Association as an athletic trainer. Approved Clinical Instructor training obtained through Missouri State University and maintained as appropriate with University standards.
  • Preferred Licensure: Missouri licensure (or eligible) for athletic training.
  • Preferred Experience: Preferred, not required.
  • Preferred Other:All duties and requirements must be performed consistent with the Mercy Health performance standards.
