Job description

The mission of The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center is to eliminate cancer in Texas, the nation, and the world through outstanding programs that integrate patient care, research and prevention, and through education for undergraduate and graduate students, trainees, professionals, employees and the public.
The primary purpose of the Advanced Practice Nurse/Physician Assistant position is to provide quality patient care in relation to the patient's prescribed diagnosis, treatment, age group, development, and other identified needs.
JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES
PROVIDE DIRECT MEDICAL SKILLS WITHIN SCOPE OF PRACTICE
1.Provide medical skills within scope of practice, as assigned.
Has primary responsibility for working with department faculty physicians to assist in covering the outpatient and inpatient clinical practice for the Endocrinology and Endocrinology-Diabetes services. Clinical aspects includes by not limited to Manage enodopathies, Manage effects of chemotherapy agents, Assess glucose needs and lipid control, Manage multiple-dose insulin and insulin pumps.
Must be able to independently initiate monthly assignments without supervision. He/she must be able to understand and respond to telephone conversations with physicians and other members of the health care team, both within and outside of the institution. He/she must be able to clearly write and/or clearly communicate verbally person-to-person or over the phone.
Attend Endocrinology Multidisciplinary Conference weekly
Attend Division of Internal Medicine Grand Rounds
Share responsibility with other department advanced practice professionals for coverage of faculty clinics, attending-on-service (AOS) and inpatient services, triage of Endocrine Center new patients and consultations, and coordination of the scheduling of these patients
2. Primary area of assignments listed below vary based upon the needs of the clinical practice and available staff:
Outpatient Services: Endocrinology or Endocrinology-Diabetes
Attend clinic with physician and conduct preliminary assessments on physician's new, consult and follow-up clinic patients
Dictate notes on new, consult and follow-up patients
Assist with clinic and hospital related paperwork (completing CSR, filling out radiology and nuclear medicine forms, placing patients on clinical pathway, writing/calling in prescriptions)
Retrieve and review labs, glucose monitoring results, pathology results, radiology reports
Facilitate communication with patients between clinic visits by reviewing outpatient laboratory, glucose monitoring results, and adjusting patient medications.
Maintain independent outpatient clinics, under supervision from a faculty physician, as assigned
Attend clinic and conduct assessments on new, consult and follow-up clinic patients.
Dictate notes on new, consult and follow-up patients
Assist with clinic related paperwork (completing CSR, filling out radiology and nuclear medicine forms, placing patients on clinical pathway, writing/calling in prescriptions).
Retrieving and reviewing labs, pathology results, x-ray reports
Inpatient Services: Endocrinology or Endocrinology-Diabetes
Attend Inpatient Rounds under the direction of the Endocrine and/or Diabetes Attending's on Service and Fellow(s)
Perform inpatient consultations and follow-up visits, as assigned by the Endocrine and/or Diabetes Attending's on Service
Perform in-patient follow-up of patients previously seen by the department faculty physicians who have undergone surgery and are admitted for observation
New Patient and Consultations Triage and Evaluation: Endocrinology or Endocrinology-Diabetes
Endocrinology
Review, triage, and facilitate New Patient medical acceptance in the Endocrine New Patient Access Center. The Multidisciplinary Endocrine Center is staffed by faculty from Endocrinology, Endocrine Surgery, and Head/Neck Surgery to provide coordinated care for patients with endocrine tumors or endocrine effects from other cancer care.
Assist Endocrine Center staff to perform peer-to-peer requests to obtain financial authorization for procedures/tests, in conjunction with faculty
Triage internal Endocrinology consultations, in conjunction with faculty; and direct the scheduling of these patients with the scheduling staff
Attend the Endocrinology Attending on Service (AOS) Clinics that see urgent new patients and consults, working with the Endocrine AOS (see 1.b duties)
Attend the IOTOX Clinics that see consults and established patients for IOTOX management, working with designated faculty (see 1.b duties)
Attend Thyroid Nodule Clinic, as needed
Endocrinology--Diabetes
Triage internal Endocrinology and Glycemic consultations, in conjunction with faculty; and direct the scheduling of these patients with the scheduling staff
Attend the Glycemic Urgent Clinics that see same-day and urgent consults for glycemic management, working with the Diabetes faculty (see 1.b duties)
PROVIDE QUALITY PATIENT CARE
2.Provide quality patient care in relation to the patient's prescribed diagnosis, treatment, age group, development and other identified needs:
Have access to all medical records that would normally be available to the physician. Perform and record histories, physical assessments and progress notes within 24 hours. For patients co-managed, sign off and forward to the supervising physician for co-signature within ten days.
Order routine tests appropriate to the services provided under such orders. Access biopsy and laboratory reports. He/she must also be able to perform simple mathematical computations with and without the assistance of calculators including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Order patient medications and treatments within authorized limited prescriptive authority consistent with institutional delegated prescriptive authority policies and procedures.
Perform routine admission procedures. Input patient information into the computer by typing on a keyboard all information as required. Must be able to visually read information on a video screen and/or on hard copy and prepare printouts of patient information using a computer and printer.
Interview patients for symptoms, side-effects, toxicities, and determine their status pertaining to the investigational aspects of protocols. Calculate drug doses when appropriate. Chart notes. Measure films to monitor disease response. Assess toxicity, grade and make handwritten entries onto flow sheet or database. Assure protocol compliance and assist physicians as necessary. Requires the ability to walk from his/her office to clinic and/or hospital nursing stations and then return to the office.
Schedule and perform delegated medical procedures as required.
EDUCATION/RESEARCH/COLLABORATION
3.Provide patient and trainee education. Participate in clinical protocol clinical tasks as needed. Commit to collaborative relationships with co-workers, patients, faculty, physicians and all members of the health care team.
Deliver education to patients and their families. Conduct in-service training for clinic and in-house nursing personnel regarding protocol requirements. Act as liaison with patients, families, physicians, and other personnel.
Participate in trainee education, i.e. student Advanced Practice Nurses, house officers and medical students. Instruct coworkers in allied positions in recording patient information and/or data entry. May supervise personnel in related activities.
Participate and collaborate on clinical research protocols, under direct supervision of faculty physicians. Interview patients and review the eligibility criteria to identify potential patients for protocol studies. Schedule and conduct follow-up appointments.

After first year in position, serve as Team Leader for advanced practice professionals in rotation schedule, as assigned.
PROVIDE OTHER SERVICES TO FACILITATE DIRECT MEDICAL SERVICES
4.Demonstrate an awareness of and responsiveness to the larger system of healthcare to provide patient care that is cost effective and demonstrates resource allocation that does not compromise quality of care.
Advocates for quality patient care and assist patients in dealing with system complexities.
Accepts responsibility for promoting a safe environment for patient care and recognizes and participates in the correction of system-based factors that negatively impact patient care.
Assist with various projects as assigned.
Other duties as assigned
EDUCATION: Master's degree from an accredited Physician Assistant (PA) program by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA), except for Physician Assistants who graduated from a PA program prior to 2013. All of the following: PA certification by the National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants.
LICENSURE: Licensed by the Texas State Board of Physician Assistant Examiners. MAY BE REQUIRED: Eligible to be granted limited prescriptive authority by the State of Texas. Must meet the American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) , ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) or PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) if working in one of following department: Pediatrics - Patient Care (113100).
