The Orthopaedic Physician Assistant (PA) provides medical care under the supervision of our board-certified orthopaedic Total Joint replacement and reconstruction surgeon. The PA performs examinations, interprets diagnostic tests, prescribes medications, and assists in surgery for the care of persons with orthopaedic hip and knee replacements. This PA will join our new Total Joint surgeon to help with building and supporting a busy and rewarding Total Joint practice.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Physician the Orthopaedic Physician Assistant will:
- First assist the surgeon in the operating room
- Surgical assist help for call and add-on elective cases as needed
- Complete paperwork and the assessing of patients in between OR cases
- See clinic patients and follow up on the numerous details associated with a clinical practice
- Perform routine examinations and pre-operative history and physical exams
- Communicate with patients regarding questions, test results, MRI results, surgery, and post-operative follow-up
- Dictate clinic notes, H&Ps and discharge summaries, review pre-operative studies to include CXRs, EKGs, and routine lab tests
- Perform joint aspirations and intra-articular injections using aseptic technique
- Perform minor surgical procedures such as pin removals, I&Ds, and suturing simple lacerations
- Perform rounds on hospital inpatients, chart their progress & report any abnormalities to supervising physician
- Know at all times the status of key acute patients, including lab work, discharge status, etc.
- Seek additional knowledge of orthopaedic Total Joint and Reconstructive Surgery procedures by continuing to read and study the latest journals, books and published papers, attend conferences
- Duties and responsibilities may be added, deleted or changed at any time at the discretion of management, formally or informally, either verbally or in writing.
- Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant program
- Certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) and licensed or eligible to be licensed in the state of Colorado.
- Prior clinical and surgical orthopaedic experience, preferred.
- Valid Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) License
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification, preferred
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software, ability to quickly learn enterprise and imaging systems, and similar computer applications
- Must relate well to other people and be tolerant and considerate of their condition(s) by understanding their anxieties and allaying their fears
- Core competencies in job knowledge, planning/organizing, ethics, communication, problem solving, and confidentiality
- Valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and willing to travel to multiple locations.
Physical Requirements
- The work environment is the typical medical office environment. The employee must be able to complete their work satisfactorily in an environment where there are significant distractions, including staff, patients, and vendors walking through and conversing, telephones ringing, conversations carrying over, loud noises, and interruptions to answer questions from others
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to sit and use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee frequently is required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand (8-12 hours per day); walk; reach with hands and arms, and stoop, kneel, bend, crouch, or crawl
- The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 30 pounds and should do so in a sound and safe manner. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee will regularly assist patients in turning and arising from exam table; will regularly push wheelchair patients; and regularly assists patients in arising from and returning to wheelchair or bed.
