Perform direct patient care for the Division of Infectious Diseases including diagnostic and therapeutic services with physician supervision. Within the PA/ARNP/Physician relationship, PAs/ARNPs exercise autonomy in medical decision making and services provided. Assist in educating healthcare students, residents, and fellows as they rotate through the respective departments and divisions. To assist in research endeavors as appropriate. The focus of this position will be to provide support for The HIV (Virology) Clinic.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide care responsibilities as directed by a supervising physician for Outpatient HIV. This will include the Satellite Clinic and Telemedicine.
- Obtain medical history and perform physical examination.
- Assess, assist, diagnose, and treat medical or surgical problems and record findings.
- Perform or assist in and interpret the performance of laboratory and related studies.
- Provides independent and collaborative diagnosis and management of health care problems and disease prevention for Virology patients.
- Facilitates changes in nursing care based on systematic assessment and evaluation.
- Supports quality patient care through orientation and staff programs.
- Conducts clinical research protocols predominantly surrounding vaccine or other Infectious Diseases related treatments.
- Assist in delivery of services to patients requiring continuing care.
- Refer patients to appropriate specialty and subspecialty physicians as indicated by the patients' problems.
- Evaluate, treat and institute procedures essential to providing an appropriate response to emergency medical problems.
- Maintain awareness of health facilities, agencies, and resources in order to facilitate the appropriate referral of patients.
- Admit patients to hospital or health care facility as directed.
- Order and interpret laboratory tests and x-ray procedures.
- Order diets, physical therapy inhalation therapy, or other rehabilitative services.
- Order medications and administer drugs.
- Direct other medical personnel and health professionals in the execution of patient care.
- Perform duties appropriate to a physician's practice.
- Serves in a consultative and resource capacity to other divisions, the department and the community as needed.
- Evaluates and implements clinical research protocols.
- Provides clinical coordination functions associated with subject recruitment, enrollment, and data collection.
- Performs clinical/health care research activities and function as a specialist/technical expert, conducting patient evaluation and documentation for subjects in Clinical Trials. Research studies may involve topics related to women's health, pediatrics, and geriatrics.
- Coordinates care of clinical trials research participants according to protocols requiring a high level of judgment and independent action and managing the safety of subjects/patients.
- Develops and completes documentation for clinical Trials (IRB, P&T, Sponsored Programs, CRC, FDA, NIH, et cetera).
- Generates research questions regarding health care for particular patient populations, related to Infectious Diseases and vaccines.
- Initiates research to investigate clinical issues in Infectious Diseases.
- Supervises staff in the management of clinical research protocols.
- Coordinates activities to achieve divisional and departmental goals as delegated.
- Assumes responsibility for administrative activities as delegated by the supervisor.
- Participates in activities that enhance clinical and research expertise.
- Works with interested groups that influence the health care of Virology population.
- Participates in professional activities of the Clinical Research Groups, community, and professional organizations.
- Maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students, and the public.

Education/License Requirements:
- Must comply with registration and licensure requirements as specified by the Iowa Board of Physician Assistant Examiners which include graduation from an accredited PA educational program and/or certification by the NCCPA.
Required Qualifications:
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication and organizational skills are required.
Desired Qualifications:
- Recent (within 3-5 years) clinical rotations and/or work experience in a related field is desirable.
- Experience in outpatient women's health and/or clinical research trials is desirable.
- Phlebotomy skills are highly desirable.
