Supervises: Physical Therapy Technicians, PTA students
JOB SUMMARY
Treats and progresses patients under the direction of a physical therapist. Responsible, along with licensed Physical Therapist, for patient and family education as well as timely and accurate documentation and ongoing communication with physicians and other healthcare professionals
RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential Functions
* Demonstrates a commitment to the mission of Swedish Covenant Hospital and demonstrates a service orientation and adheres to all responsibilities and standards of the Hospital.
1. Carries out treatment programs as determined by a licensed Physical Therapist. Appropriately treats patients per program as designed using therapeutic techniques and modalities. Demonstrates skills in the following areas:
- Therapeutic exercise
- Gait training
- Hot/cold packs, ultrasound, interferential, electric stimulation,
TENS, JOBST
- Whirlpool treatments
- Demonstrates sound clinical judgment in all aspects of patient
care.
2. Instructs and educates patients and families as appropriate.
3. Keeps timely and accurate documentation of patient progress and status per department protocol. Keeps accurate and timely records of patient charges.
4. Supervises technicians in patient treatment. Supervises and organizes clinical experiences for Physical Therapy Assistant students under the supervision of a senior PT and/or the PT Clinical supervisor.
5. Communicates with co-workers, physicians, other hospital personnel and outside agencies as required in the treatment of patients.
6. Participates in patient education and support programs.
7. Participates in in-service and on-the-job training of co-workers, hospital personnel and the community as requested.
8. Participates in program development and TQM/CQI initiatives.
9. Continues own professional education through attendance at professional meetings and courses outside the hospital, by reviewing current literature and by attending hospital conferences, meetings and in-service training programs.
10. Participates in patient scheduling, entering charges, peer review and program coordination efforts as requested. Helps to maintain treatment area in a safe, clean and orderly condition. Attends to status of equipment and supplies in clinic, reporting need for ordering as well as maintenance to senior PT in area.
PATIENT CARE/AGE SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND QUALIFICATIONS
Recognizes need and behaviors of a variety of disability, age and ethic groups and is able to tailor approach to patient and family appropriately. Understands the normal aging process.
QUALIFICATION/BASIC JOB REQUIREMENTS
• Graduate of APTA approved Physical Therapy Assistant school.
• No Experience required.
• Good communication skills including good ability to speak, read and understand English
• A Team player
• Sound judgment; patient focused work ethic.
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION
• Must have a current PTA certificate and be eligible for licensure in Illinois.

• Significant contact with patients and visitors
• Contact with Physicians
• Hospital Personnel
• Occasional PTA student contact.
ENVIRONMENT
• Sitting: 10% - Standing/Walking: 90%
• Frequently involved in transferring patients. Minimal other regular lifting, carrying or moving of objects.
• Repetitive tasks include work-processing and typing approximately 0-5%
• Exposed to blood/body fluids and airborne disease during direct patient care
