Summary
The Atmospheric Science Branch in the Earth Science Division is seeking a Physical Scientist to lead the application of quantum sensing technologies in Earth Observation. Quantum technologies are poised to create new actual applications with unprecedented potentials such as quantum simulations, computing, imaging, sensing, metrology, optimization, and machine learning at the edge of maturity. The team conducts research that improves our understanding of the climate system.

Duties
  • Lead multidisciplinary teams to leverage the latest developments in quantum information science and integrated photonics.
  • Establish new collaborations with academia, industry, and other not-for-profit organizations to advance the sensor's technological maturity and explore novel use cases of Earth Remote Sensing.
  • Lead cross functional teams to develop Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning-enabled or integrated solutions for Earth observation, especially aerosol-cloud-surface properties, and other Remote Sensing products of varying size and complexity.
  • Conceive and lead NASA's Earth Venture-class investigations, including airborne observations and synergies with multiple Remote Sensing observations that examine aerosol-cloud-radiation processes and their impact on climate.
  • Support current and planned NASA Earth Science Decadal Survey satellite missions. Help define algorithms used to retrieve data and lead efforts to validate data via correlative measurements and interpretations.
  • Forge and maintain a close working relationship with NASA Headquarters Earth Science leadership and program managers and other external stakeholders ensuring alignment of Branch activities and personnel in support of NASA's mission.

Qualifications
In addition to the Basic Education Requirement (in the Education section below), to qualify for this position you must meet the requirements below. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work.
NASA utilizes OPM-approved qualification and rating requirements specific for Aerospace Technology (AST) positions which recognizes NASA's unique aerospace work. The specific qualifications and minimum education requirements are further described below and within the education section of the job announcement.
To qualify for GS-15, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-14 level:
  • Conducting scientific investigations directed toward discovering, disseminating, and applying new or expanded knowledge in the study of aerosols, clouds and surface properties using active and passive Remote Sensing;
  • Working across disciplinary boundaries and developing collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders (e.g. universities, national organizations, private entities) to develop innovative Remote Sensing concepts;
  • Providing guidance or technical oversight to a group of scientists focused on technology development projects supported through a directed or competed award process with deliverables and documentation.

Education
Basic Education Requirement: You must have successfully completed a bachelor's degree with a major in one of the following:
a) Engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs
b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science or other field of Science
c) Computer Science that included 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of course work in any combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science with at least half of those hours in mathematics and statistics courses that included differential and integral calculus; and that provided an in-depth knowledge of theoretical and practical applications of computer science, including digital computer system architecture and system software organization, the representation and transformation of information structures, and the theoretical models for such representations and transformations.
If you did not complete a qualifying bachelor's degree, you may be eligible if you have obtained a graduate degree in an AST qualifying field, as listed above.
Degrees in engineering technology are not considered qualifying for this position.
