Summary
This position performs uncomplicated Physical Science technical tasks (e.g., in chemistry, geology, geophysics, oceanography, hydrology, physics, atmospheric science and/or other Physical Sciences.

Duties
Selectee will lead or participate in cave trips into Wind Cave. Selectee will lead researchers into Wind Cave to assist in collecting samples or data for research projects. Assists with cave restoration projects including algae, lint, and dust mitigation projects. Other duties include operating air quality monitoring equipment, weather and hydrological monitoring, in-cave bat surveys, paleontological inventories, and other Physical Science projects at Wind Cave National Park. The work is performed indoors, within the cave, and outdoors, sometimes under adverse weather conditions. Work requires frequent bending, stooping, walking, crawling, and squeezing through tight spaces in the cave. Wearing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be required. Moving through the cave requires a high level of physical fitness and endurance. Work can require lifting and moving heavy items.
Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level.

  • You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued driver's license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued driver's license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists. Lastly, you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. Please indicate in your application whether you possess a valid State driver's license.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • Career Seasonal Appointment: The employee will work during annually recurring periods of employment, which will last at least six (6) months but total less than twelve (12) months per calendar year. When operational needs and/or funds are not available, the selectee will be placed in non-pay status. Placement in non-pay status will not be on a sporadic, occasional, or unplanned basis. The season is expected to last eight (8) months, beginning September through April. The employee is expected to be in non-duty/non-pay status from early May through August.

Qualifications
All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-12/05/2023-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.
Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.
SELECTIVE FACTOR: This position performs off trail caving, and experience including travel into undeveloped (no light system, improved walkway, handrails, stairs, etc.) cave or portion of a larger cave using maps and low impact caving techniques to navigate to underground work sites is required. This may include purposes such as survey, exploration, scientific, recreation, or as a guide for an off-trail cave tour. Candidates who do not meet this requirement by close of this announcement will receive no further consideration for this position.

To qualify for this position at the GS-06 grade level, you must possess at least one or all of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Examples of qualifying specialized experience include work in the fields of geophysics, chemistry, hydrology, engineering, geology, and metallurgy, assisting with natural resources research projects; compiling and analyzing scientific data into for Physical Sciences research or natural resource-based studies or reports; operating complex sampling, monitoring, and laboratory equipment; collecting and analyzing environmental monitoring data such as water quality and quantity, atmospheric chemistry or air quality; and setting-up and managing remote environmental monitoring equipment such as weather stations and water-quality instruments, or using computer programs such as databases to compile, store, retrieve, analyze and report resource management data. Experience as a laboratory mechanic or in a trade or craft may be credited as specialized experience when the work was performed in close association with physical scientists or other technical personnel and provided intensive knowledge of appropriate scientific principles, methods, techniques, and precedents. You must include hours per week worked.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least one full year of graduate education in an accredited educational institution (18 semester hour or 27 quarter hours) directly related to this position in an appropriate field of Physical Science, such as geology, geoscience, geophysics, earth science, environmental science, hydrology or other directly related fields. You must include transcripts.
-OR-
Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. For example, possess 6 months of specialized experience (50% of the experience requirements for this position and grade level) combined with 6 months (9 semester hours) of graduate education, as outlined above (50% of the education required to qualify), directly related to this position. You must include transcripts.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Education
To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.
If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

A Relocation Incentive May Be Authorized for a Federal employee when the employee must move, as directed by the National Park Service (NPS) either through a management directed reassignment or selection for employment, to a different location at least 50 miles away from the one where his/her position of record held at time of selection is currently located, due to a need of the NPS. A relocation incentive is not the same as a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move and, as such, may be granted in conjunction with one another.
Physical Demands: The work is partially sedentary with prolonged standing, walking, and bending often required. Heavy items (e.g., packs and equipment) must be lifted and carried on a routine basis.
Working Conditions: The work is performed in an office, laboratory, and in the field. Field work includes exposure to extreme weather or terrain conditions, poisonous plants, biting insects, and wild animals. Laboratory work may involve exposure to hazardous chemicals.
