Photo Director | Lonely Planet

Lonely Planet is looking for a Photo Director to guide the visual and systems strategy for photography across all platforms, from guidebooks to digital. We're looking for an agile magic maker who has experience scaling photo operations using stock photography. As important as the final product, you will create and improve upon processes and establish best practices, working cross functionally and closely with our publishing, editorial, social and design teams. Reporting to the team's Executive Creative Director, you come with a rigor for creative excellence and a passion for inspiring travelers through epic yet authentic imagery. 

What You'll Do:

• Establish and maintain a visual identity across all published imagery, working with cross functional stakeholders from publishing to editorial to ensure quality and brand standards are adhered to at all times 
• Create and maintain annual photography budget inclusive of print and digital needs, across stock and commissioned imagery 
• Identify image needs and ensure sources are accurate, appropriately licensed, managed and properly cited.
• Establish and maintain ongoing relationships with stock libraries that benefit and elevate the Lonely Planet brand 
• Establish and maintain ongoing relationships with domestic and international photographers that can work within Lonely Planet guidelines 
• Crop, retouch and optimize images for individual website specifications as needed
• Utilize and improve internal photography systems including our Digital Asset Management System.
• Manage photo editor and internal relationships and progress with cross functional teams for improved workflows and photo fluency 

What We're Looking For:

• 5+ years of experience as a photo editor ,working with stock, design and original photography across a variety of channels and leading processes for agile photo teams 
• A creative vision for improving imagery and a tactical plan for bringing that vision to life
• An innovative approach to photography and the ways that images are utilized.
• An understanding of both the publishing and digital worlds as it pertains to image rights and standards of excellence 
• Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and graphic design experience: cropping, siloing, retouching, creating compositions, gifs and collages, adding text and saving for digital use.
• Travel and lifestyle brand experience.
• Extensive knowledge of copyright, permissions and attribution.
• Ability to quickly scan through stock imagery and select images that are creative, accurate, and on-brand.
• Experience working with Digital Asset Management Systems.
• The confidence to explain and support your thinking to both internal and external stakeholders.
• The resilience to perform under pressure and deliver high-quality work to tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
• A proven track record of getting results and improving standards.

• Cash Compensation Range: $150,000 - $225,000*
  *Note actual salary is based on geographic location, qualifications, and experience.
