A Brief Overview
Performs a variety of laboratory tasks in the acute care (hospital) or ambulatory (clinic) setting, to include order retrieval, specimen collection, and waived testing Works closely with other laboratory personnel, Patient Care Services staff, healthcare providers, and patients to obtain high quality specimens. Provides specimen collection services in all areas in the hospital, including ED/Trauma, critical care, medical floors, airborne and contact isolation rooms, surgery, maternal/child and long-term care facilities. Responds to "code blue" events. Has frequent contact with patients, their families, nurses, physicians and other facility employees.
Education Qualifications

  • High School Diploma GED also accepted. Required

Experience Qualifications
  • Experience with phlebotomy. Preferred
  • Experience in a lab or hospital setting. Preferred

Licenses and Certifications
  • Registered Phlebotomy Technician - AMT Preferred
  • PBT-Phlebotomy Technician - ASCP Preferred
  • Drivers License - KSDOT Clean MVR with 3-year baseline Required

What you will do
  • Obtain and properly identify blood specimens by performing venipunctures and capillary punctures in all age groups (newborns, pediatrics, adults, and geriatrics) and patient types throughout the hospital and at long-term care facilities. Follow the Phlebotomist Service Standards: o Use patient-centric communication o Demonstrate empathetic responses to patients' concerns o Acknowledge wait time and service delays o Protect patient privacy o Demonstrate teamwork with all members of the healthcare team o Follow the Laboratory's Professional Behavior Guidelines policy
  • Insure that specimens are collected according to appropriate protocol, in appropriate tubes and/or containers
  • Perform waived testing. Maintain quality waived testing results by following department procedures and testing schedule; recording results in the quality-control log; identifying and reporting needed changes.
  • Resolve unusual test or duplicative orders by contacting the specimen processing specialist, physician, nurse, medical laboratory scientist; notify supervisor of unresolved orders.
  • Collect specimens for legal blood alcohol, drug screens, and paternity tests. Testify in regional court systems to explain collection procedure if subpoenaed.
  • Instruct patients in proper procedures for specimen collection when necessary. Answer patient questions regarding collection techniques and offers additional resources if patient requests them.
  • Apply mathematics to determine safe removal volume for pediatric collections.
  • Access, select, release and print interfaced orders from the electronic medical record system.
  • Use appropriate PPE and procedures in contact and airborne isolation rooms. Appropriately document the use of PPE in the EMR/Rover with every patient encounter.
  • Maintain and monitor stock of supplies in collection area; monitor expiration dates.
  • Respond appropriately to patient adverse reaction to venipuncture.
  • Travel to additional locations when needed.
  • Converse with patient to allay fear of procedure.
  • Complies with OSHA guidelines, Stormont Vail and Department polices and procedures.

Travel Requirements
  • 20% Travel to other locations for specimen collection may be required depending on department/shift needs.
