DESIRED SKILLS, ABILITIES AND KNOWLEDGE:
Must have good communication skills with the ability to relay detailed specimen collection information to appropriate persons.
Must be able to follow detailed written directions and be able to follow direction of lead staff.
Must have computer skills in Word and Excel, and able to orientate to a laboratory information and hospital information system.
Must have ability to process paperwork with attention to detail, completing tasks with accuracy and precision.
Have ability to work in a team setting.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
1. Supports the Spooner Health Mission and Vision. Promotes and demonstrates an appreciation for organizational values.
2. Performs venipunctures and capillary collections in a manner that diminishes patient stress, pain, and safety, and resulting in proper and satisfactory specimens for analysis.
3. Uses personal protective equipment as necessary or mandated.
4. Greets patient and visitors is a prompt and courteous manner, including those on the phone. Instructs and prepares patients for the ordered procedures.
5. Uses AIDET in interacting with patients. Verifies patient identification and verifies providers orders. Collects appropriate specimens and processes the samples correctly.
6. Put patients at ease and minimizes patient discomfort. Responds to patients with empathy and a positive attitude.
7. Is equally competent to care for infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric lab customers. Interacts with all customers without bias or prejudice.
8. Understands what a compliant order is and orders tests using Epic. Distributes laboratory data in a confidential and timely manner, using fax, phone, courier, and mail. Performs other clerical filing and documentation as needed.
9. Maintains the departmental equipment, supplies, and work areas. Orders and stocks supplies as necessary. Places orders to vendors and receives shipments of supplies from vendors. Documents receipt of supplies and delivers supplies to correct area.
10. Cleans work areas and patient access areas.
11. Must work as a supportive team member. Is willing to expand skills and responsibilities. Is willing to expand personal and professional areas of expertise. Assists in conducting performance improvement activities.
12. Collects blood and other culture specimens with <3% contamination rate.
13. Is consistently mindful of biohazards; avoids endangering customers, co-workers, and self. Handles infectious material correctly. Assures a safe, therapeutic environment for all patients, families, visitors, and staff.
14. Collects blood for legal purposes and following all chain-of-custody and regulatory requirements for processing and documentation.

OTHER DUTIES
1. Documents all work.
2. Participates in continuing education and laboratory meetings.
3. Performs special tasks and projects as requested, such as new employee orientation.
4. Assesses specimen acceptability.
5. Will likely receive subpoenas in response to legal collections.
