Job Description
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the supervision of the Director of Donor Services or Donor Services Team Lead, following established methods and standards of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB), is responsible for the efficient and safe blood collection from blood donors. This is to be done in a pleasant and reassuring manner.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (may include, but not limited to)
- Checks donor blood bags and donor room supplies to assure sufficient quantities to meet the daily needs.
- Maintains accurate manual and computer files on quality control and blood collections.
- Performs collection procedures from various donor categories. This includes obtaining demographic information and medical history, performing mini-physical examination, venipuncture and observing for donor reactions.
- Administers post-venipuncture care to donors ranging from serving refreshments to caring for donors who may have any type of reaction relating to the blood donation process (i.e. fainting, vomiting, having convulsions, etc).
- Promotes positive public relations with donors, recruiters, employees and sponsor contacts.
- Meets educational and certification requirements of Shepeard Community Blood Center and Donor Services Department, and follows current good manufacturing practices (cGMP).
- Performs Daily QC.
- Performs, documents and maintains Quality Control of all equipment in compliance of SOPs.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
OFFICE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Answers phones and directs callers to an answer or to a point of contact for questions/concerns.
- Updates any web-based documents for appointment schedules and donor information.
- HemaConnect: updates donor profiles, to include but not limited to, donor email addresses, opt-in text messaging, donor points, donor reward store orders, scheduled donor appointments and information in the Donor Communication Tab.
- Explains & assists donors with HemaConnect Donor Profile and Shepeard Donor Portal setup.
- Explains & assists donors with downloading and navigating the Shepeard Donor App.
- Maintains, organizes and cleans functional work area and equipment. Reports broken and/or malfunctioning equipment to Team Lead/Director.
- Maintains all necessary documents regarding the donation process, to include but not limited to, SOP books, donor consent forms, procedure records, etc.
SCOPE OF AUTHORITY REPORTING:
The employee is required to perform assigned daily routines on a timely basis. The employee is expected to work with other departmental employees, as well as employees in other departments, as a team in order to provide the best quality service to donors.
The employee reports to the Director of Donor Services.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Completion of a CNA program preferred.
- Completion of an approved phlebotomy course or a minimum one (1) year phlebotomy experience.
Experience
- Satisfactory completion of clinical experience following phlebotomy course.
- Prefer one (1) year experience in the medical field taking vital signs, giving patient care, etc a plus.
Knowledge and Skill Abilities
- Must have basic clerical skills in order to maintain clear QC and donor records.
- Must have basic computer skills not limited to data entry.
- Must be able to stand for prolonged periods.
- Must be able to clearly communicate with donors while exhibiting exceptional customer service.
- Must maintain professional appearance as defined by 3.03 Personal Appearance & Hygiene policy and the Donor Services Addendum to the Employee Handbook.
- Must maintain a 95% attendance record.
Licenses/Certifications
- Phlebotomy certification preferred.
- CNA certification preferred.
PHYSICAL SKILLS/REQUIREMENTS:
Employee will be regularly required to stand, walk, reach, stoop, kneel, bend, twist, and push/pull. Must have physical ability to lift 30 pounds.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Works in a community blood center with adequate light and climate control. Must be able to perform duties which require standing or bending for long periods of time without relief. Must be able to work irregular hours, often in excess of 8 hours per day, and week-ends. Must be able to work with needles, scissors, blood bags, human blood and collection equipment and deal with stressful situations. Work involves potential exposure to infectious disease from blood and blood products.
