Pay Range: $15.25-$21.50 per hour
Basic Job Function and Responsibilities
The timely phlebotomy of patients for blood specimens sufficient to perform all tests ordered. To perform clerical functions associated with ordering tests and distributing results. Promotes the Mission, Vision, Values of Mercy Iowa City.
- Answers the telephone and redirects calls as needed; takes verbal orders from physicians' offices and schedules outpatient visits; fax results and provide copies for nursing units or patients.
- Assists in the orientation and training of new employees.
- Evaluates and prioritizes phlebotomy requests to assure collection of all ordered tests within the prescribed turn-around-time.
- Instructs patients in proper collection of urine and stool specimens.
- Inventories and restocks phlebotomy supplies. Maintains a clean and orderly phlebotomy area.
- Matches labels with specimens delivered to the lab without error.
- Receives all specimens using correct time and data; distributes to proper lab section, announcing all STATS.
- Obtains blood specimens from patients of all ages using venipuncture and capillary puncture techniques and assuring positive patient identification using complex handheld technology.
- Makes peripheral blood smears.
- Obtains throat and nasal specimens using proper technique.
- Orders collection lists and monitors and maintains printers to ensure timely patient collection.
- Performs additional duties as assigned.
- Receives specimens into the LIS and makes adjustments to patient accounts by charging, crediting, ordering and canceling tests in the LIS.
- Registers outpatients presenting themselves at the lab.
- Provides clerical coverage as needed. Determines medical necessity and collects ABNs as required.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent experience - Preferred
- Associates of Arts degree as a Medical Assistant or equivalent experience - Preferred
Certification(s), Licensure(s) & Registration(s)
- Phlebotomy Technician Certification (CPT) or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired - Required
