Opportunity to learn and grow into Laboratory Assistant Position
Scheduled hours: 60 hour per pay period, Day Shift
Job Summary:
Draws blood samples or assists in the procurement of blood samples. Will process patient samples for testing. Responsible for performing routine duties as directed by Phlebotomy Supervisor and Laboratory Manager. Obtains blood samples by skin puncture, and venipuncture. Collects nasal and throat swabs. Instructs patients in proper collection of urine samples. Prepares samples for reference labs.
Education Background and Experience
Minimum Education:
High school graduate or equivalent.
Required Licensure / Certifications:
Medical Assistant or Phlebotomy certification preferred. Will except Nursing Assistant Certified (NAC) with the expectation of training on the job for Phlebotomy.
Required Experience:
High school graduate. Knowledge of medical terminology. Documentation of phlebotomy training from an approved Phlebotomy training program that has included a minimum of 80 hours of training. Current Health Care Assistant Licensure in the State of Washington.
Preferred Qualifications:
Current BLS/CPR. Would prefer already trained for DOT drug screen collections.

Essential Job Functions
- Consistently draws blood by venipuncture, finger stick or heel stick competently and expediently with as little patient discomfort as possible.
- Greets patients in a courteous manner by introducing self and asking the patient to give their name.
- Identifies the patient - comparing patient information on the requisition to the patient’s identification band before venipuncture is performed. Confirms patient identification verbally with patient when possible.
- Is knowledgeable about which color top tube to use and the volume of blood needed - knows test requirements.
- Knows various needles, anticoagulants, special handling, storage requirements and preparation of tests that are to be performed.
- Completes routine blood samples within 5 minutes and difficult cases in 15 minutes.
- Labels the test tube immediately after procedure is completed with patient name, date, time and initials, or uses computer-generated labels.

Successful candidates typically begin between the beginning and midpoint of the compensation range ($18.09 – $21.31/hour) dependent on qualifications/experience and receive compensation increment increases annually.
