Job Title: Phlebotomist
Reports to: COO Complex Laboratories and Mobile Diagnostics
Job Summary:
As a phlebotomist you will be critical in establishing and delivering our mission to provide high-quality healthcare services to our patients. Your expertise in blood collection, specimen handling, and dedication will contribute to accurate diagnosis and treatment plans, ensuring the best possible outcomes for our patients.
Responsibilities:
- Travel to and from locations requesting collection services.
- Transport and move required equipment for phlebotomy and/or laboratory testing collections as needed.
- Perform venipuncture and capillary punctures with precision and care, following established protocols and safety guidelines.
- Collect and label specimens accurately, ensuring proper identification and maintaining the integrity of the samples.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area, adhering to infection control protocols and ensuring a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff.
- Provide exceptional patient care, demonstrating empathy and professionalism while easing any anxieties or concerns they may have.
- Keep accurate records of specimens collected, ensuring documentation is complete and current.
- Process specimens to prepare them for laboratory testing. Prepare specimens for reference laboratory dispatch and testing. Resolve ambiguous and/or unusual test orders by contacting the appropriate personnel. Refer unresolved orders to the originator for further clarification before collecting samples or processing specimens.
- Make the appropriate leadership aware of unresolved orders.
- Collaborate with management to establish and implement workflow optimization.
- Coordinate with vendors and suppliers to ensure inventory control with the necessary supplies.
- Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory guidelines, such as CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments), CAP, and state certification requirements.
- Monitor phlebotomy practices to identify areas for improvement.
- Train and mentor personnel on proper phlebotomy techniques, safety protocols, and compliance with regulations.
- Drive to collection sites as assigned.
- Plan workflow and schedule to maximize productivity (travel times, weather delays, traffic considerations, etc.)
- Ensure the vehicle is well-maintained, fueled, and ready to go.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma (or equivalent) or higher.
- Valid driver’s license with a safe driving record.
- Ability to navigate traffic and changing travel conditions.
- Previous phlebotomy experience
- Phlebotomist certification by ASCP (or equivalent) preferred.
- Familiarity with laboratory information systems (LIS) and other relevant software.
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Flexibility, adaptability, and a willingness to take on diverse challenges and additional duties.
Physical Requirements:
This role demands significant mobility and travel, necessitating the ability to move both locally and over longer distances. Candidates must be prepared for extended periods of standing and walking and should possess excellent fine motor skills for precision tasks. Lifting and carrying objects of varying weights, as well as frequent bending and reaching, are part of the job's physical demands. Additionally, candidates should be physically enduring and emotionally resilient, as the role may involve strenuous activities and emotionally challenging situations, along with strict adherence to infection control measures.
