Job description

Overview

Phillips Educators (PEs) are essential to facilitating the museum’s tours and programs. As key members of the Education Department, PEs help museum guests see, connect, and engage with art in new and unexpected ways. PEs are trained in student‐centered approaches and empower guests to express themselves and their values, opinions, and thoughts. Phillips Educators work with Education staff to facilitate school and adult tours. Additionally, they will support select programs that reach family, community, and public programs.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate interactive tours for a variety of audiences, including Pre-K-12 and university students, adults, and families. This includes:
    • Teaching using inquiry-based, culturally responsive approaches.
    • Adapting teaching to multiple learning styles.
    • Aligning tours with museum’s DEAI and education best practices.
    • Helping visitors feel comfortable at the museum.
  • Other responsibilities include:
    • Lead hands-on artmaking workshops.
    • Set up and clean up tour and workshop materials.
    • Research special exhibitions and the permanent collection.
    • Serve as liaison between guests and the Phillips, adapting to the needs and interests of each group.
    • Attend regular professional development and training sessions.
  • Collaborate with fellow PEs and Education Department staff in the following ways:
    • Develop curriculum and tour content.
    • Prep and follow up with tour groups, as needed.
    • Communicate tour content, routes, and materials.
    • Learn from colleagues through shadowing and sharing of resources.
  • In addition to public and private group tours, PEs can help facilitate extended school partnerships, Member Mornings, Art & Wellness programs, teacher professional development, family programs, Creative Aging, and other community and public programs.
  • Other opportunities will be available to assist with Education, Community Engagement, Special Events, Development, and other departments’ programs.

Qualifications

  • Excellent public speaking, facilitation, and verbal communications skills.
  • Teaching experience in any setting.
  • Adaptable, independent, and collaborative.
  • Willingness to learn and update teaching methods based on best practices and the needs of each group.
  • Clear communication and strong organization skills.
  • Comfortable working with young children, older students, university, adult, or older adults.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience teaching with art.
  • Understanding of museum education theory and best practices.
  • Knowledge of art, art history, and/or arts integration.
  • Experience working with PK-12 audiences.
  • Multilingual, especially Spanish or ASL.
  • Ability to lead school tours Tuesday-Friday from 9:30am-1pm on site.
  • Ability to lead school partnership programs at local schools, Monday-Friday, 8:30am-3pm.

PEs do not necessarily need to be proficient working with all audiences and all types of programs. PEs will have the option to sign up for different types of tours and programs, based on their and the Education Department’s needs, abilities, interests, and schedules. Rather, flexibility and an eagerness to learn is pivotal to success in this role.

Schedule

Applicants must be available to participate in PE training from Monday-Friday, May 6-17, from 10am-1pm.

The schedule is flexible and is based on the availability of each PE. PEs must lead at least one tour a month and attend a majority of trainings. Most programs are in-person at the museum, with some opportunities at Phillips@THEARC, in DC area schools, and virtually. Trainings occur both in-person and virtually.

Compensation

$25/hour for prep, set-up, and training; $35/hour for assisting with a program; $50/hour for leading a tour or program. Additional benefits include: 20% discount at the museum shop, free access to Phillips programs, and unlimited free access to the museum as well as additional free museum passes for friends/family.
