Pay Range

$238,380 - $306,096 Annually for the SEL.5 level

Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.

Job Description

We have multiple openings for Phase 1 Study Leads within the Strategic Deterrence (SD) directorate. In this position you will be the LLNL lead for the team supporting one of two planned Phase 1 Studies that will explore options for development of new weapon systems, working within the Weapon Technologies and Engineering (WTE) and Weapon Physics and Design (WPD) Programs. You will coordinate high-level technical activities, provide overall study direction, and act as liaison for the Phase 1 Study to the SD Deputy Director and National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). This position is in the Strategic Deterrence Directorate.   

In this role, you will

  • With WTE and WPD management, establish overall objectives and deliverables for the Phase 1 Study, to include Phase 1 concepts to meet high level study requirements.
  • With WTE and WPD management, identify staffing requirements and establish a technical team to support planned objectives and deliverables. 
  • Oversee project portfolios, working with resource staff to develop a budget and create work schedules, monitoring workflow to meet project budgets and deadlines. 
  • Lead the overall study team to include both physics and engineering programmatic elements.
  • Provide overall programmatic, technical, safety, and security direction and leadership to team members to ensure objectives and deliverables are met.
  • Serve as the primary interface between LLNL and enterprise partners (NNSA, Labs, Plants, and Sites) and DoD for purposes of the Phase 1 study.
  • Ensure that program risks and requirements are communicated in an effective and timely manner to senior leadership.
  • Monitor programmatic performance required to meet milestones and deliverables and lead corrective actions where necessary.
  • Recognize and support plans to promote and foster a culture of inclusion, diversity, equity, and accountability within the workplace.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top-Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at the time of hire.
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Subject matter expert knowledge of nuclear warhead design, science, and engineering, and/or product realization.
  • Ability to promote and maintain productive relationships across directorates, with other laboratories, and with personnel from external entities across the NNSA Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE).
  • Expert communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills, necessary to present, explain, and advise senior management and/or external sponsors.
  • Significant leadership, interpersonal skills, organizational, and supervisory skills to lead personnel, provide performance feedback, and actively participate in performance management activities.
  • Broad knowledge of laboratory policies and practices and applicable NNSA orders and requirements.
  • Ability/commitment to promote and value inclusion, diversity, equity, and accountability principles in the workplace.

Desired Qualifications

  • Master's in Engineering, Physics, or related field.
  • Expertise with project management tools and techniques, including work planning, scheduling, cost estimating, analyzing, and managing budgets, project control reporting, and Earned Value Management Systems (EVMS).
