Work Shifts Shift: 12-8:00am Job Description AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES: All areas of Kings County Hospital Pharmacy. SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Validates patient identity and screens prescriptions for completeness, formulary/restriction and payment status, prior to processing.
Obtains data for determining prescription cost and coverage. Counts dosage units of drugs, and places unit doses in appropriate cassettes for dispensing; dosage units are verified by medication name, formulation, dose, route and frequency. Receives written/electronic prescriptions, types prescription labels and affixes labels on containers.
Types and retrieves prescription data from a computer-generated file for review by a pharmacist Able to operate and refill robot for inpatient and outpatient filling Retrieves prescription files and other manual records from storage and locates prescriptions for reviewing, signing or initialing by a pharmacist. Maintains and retrieves pharmacy records using automated and / or manual systems Obtains drugs from stock, returns them to stock and rotates stock Performs pharmacy related clerical tasks Makes rounds of nursing units to pick up pharmacy orders or return medications Performs unit dose cart exchanges as scheduled, or related tasks Prepare and replace Emergency Trays Maintains appropriate records for all controlled and non-controlled drug transactions Repackages and labels drugs Receive drug items from suppliers or mailroom, process invoices accordingly and scan medication into system Re-orders supplies and drugs proactively Maintains knowledge regarding proper handling of hazardous materials Shall ensure the overall cleanliness of work area Attends educational programs and department staff development activities Participates in Pharmacy/Nursing Committee and other committees as needed Checks e-mail daily at beginning of shift for announcements Attends staff meetings and/ or read minutes in order to be knowledgeable of Department policies and protocols Performs monthly nursing unit inspections, pharmacy, storeroom and other related areas as assigned per designated inspection sheets Performs assignments under the supervision of Pharmacists Levels I, II & III and management team Prepares, delivers, restocks and returns medication stored in automated dispensing machines Maintains and inspects inventory of automated dispensing machines Assists in the maintenance of automated dispensing machines including, drawer recovery and cleaning, and escalation of any issues requiring vendor service Compound non-sterile and sterile batch medications made in a sterile environment under the supervision of a Pharmacist Under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist, assist in compounding, preparing, labeling, or dispensing of drugs used to fill valid prescriptions or medication orders or in compounding, preparing, and labeling in anticipation of a valid prescription or medication order for a patient to be served by the facility. Compound hazardous and non-hazardous medications under the direct personal supervision of a licensed pharmacist.
Assists maintaining refrigerator or freezer logs and other documents as needed Answers telephone calls and assists as needed Aids in the general operation of pharmacy and assists pharmacist as necessary Maintains knowledge of Joint Commission standards for medication management Escalates any issues/problems identified to pharmacist or management team Properly discards medication waste or expired medications Handles or delivers completed prescriptions to the patient or the person authorized to act on behalf of the patient, including pick up and payment tasks, and advises of the availability of counseling to be conducted by the licensed pharmacist or pharmacy intern. Uses Retail Pharmacy software, to review patient information, enter prescription information, adjudicate claims, and print labels Able to lift 45 pounds and stand, walk, bend the entire shift and or working hours Required to work weekends and holidays as needed Minimum Qualifications Effective April 25, 2021, all new hires into the title of Pharmacy Technician must be licensed to practice as a Registered Pharmacy Technician by the NYSED.
