OVERVIEW
Provides technical and administrative assistance in the day-to-day activities of a designated pharmacy operation. Assists in the dispensing of prescription pharmaceuticals, fills routine orders for non-prescription pharmaceuticals, and provides direct customer assistance and routine problem resolution to patients dropping off and picking up prescriptions. Coordinates the billing, and fiscal tracking operations of the pharmacy, and oversees inventory and data management activities in support of pharmacy operations.
DUTIES AND RESPONSBILITIES
1. Assists the pharmacist in filling, preparing, and dispensing prescriptions; counts, packages, and labels unit doses for inspection; fills routine orders for prepackaged non-prescription pharmaceuticals and medical supplies.
2. Prepares patient medication packages for delivery through appropriate preferred courier service.
3. Enters patient prescription orders into a computerized database; creates and maintains computerized patient health and insurance information, in accordance with established protocol and procedure.
4. Communicates with prescribing practitioners as necessary to obtain refill authorizations for patients; communicates as necessary with third party payers to obtain payment for prescription claims.
5. Assists with inventory control, to include ordering replacement drugs, removing outdated stock, checking new orders, and returning unwanted stock; performs periodic inventories of pharmaceutical and related stock.
6. Receives and processes pharmaceutical deliveries from vendors as appropriate, and places on shelves in accordance with established protocol and procedure.
7. Assists in training new staff on routine procedures.
8. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND RESPONSIBILITIES REQUIRED
- Knowledge of supplies, equipment, and/or services ordering and inventory control.
- Knowledge of local, State, and Federal laws and regulations pertaining to pharmacy.
- Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.
- Knowledge of procedures and standards for the labeling and dispensing of prescription drugs.
- Knowledge of medication brand and generic names.
- Strong computerized spreadsheeting and data management skills.
- Ability to read, sort, check, count, and verify numbers.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge of medical insurance and third-party payment systems and procedures.
- Strong customer service orientation.
- Knowledge of basic fiscal management, accounting procedures, and related documentation.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
? Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
? May require discipline-specific licensure and/or professional certification, as specified by the department in the preferences.
? Must maintain certification status.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT
? Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 25 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.
? Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
