Job description

Involves all aspects of the medication use process, including procurement, prescribing, compounding, dispensing, storage of medications, administration and monitoring. Partners with physicians and other clinicians to provide treatments and advice to patients, records patient history relating to medication use and ensures the safe and secure storage of medications and related supplies. Advises physicians in determining the best possible treatments for specific diseases, stays current on pharmacy regulations, treatments and developments in research and design. Pharmacists are the experts on drug therapy and the primary health professionals who optimize use of medication for the benefit of the patients. Meets educational needs of patients, healthcare team, students and residents. Ensures adherence to regulatory and fiscal requirements.
Recognized organization-wide expert. Has significant impact and influence on organizational policy and program development. Regularly leads projects of critical importance to the organization; these projects carry substantial consequences of success or failure. Directs programs with organization-wide impact (or may have impact beyond the University) that include formulating strategies and administering policies, processes, and resources. Significant barriers to entry exist at this level.
Applies advanced professional clinical informatics concepts and extensive knowledge of medication-use systems and technology to projects of all levels of scope and complexity. Leads and supports Pharmacy Services iniatives and practice as a pharmacy informatics subject matter expert.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

Department Description

The Department of Pharmaceutical Services provides a full range of contemporary services for patients cared by the UCSF Medical Center, as well as its providers and payers. The UCSF Pharmacy Enterprise encompasses Inpatient Pharmacy Services, Ambulatory Care Services, Specialty Drug Pharmacy, Pharmacy Business Services, Pharmacy Informatics, Medication Safety and Regulatory Compliance, Oncology Infusion Services, 340B Management, Pharmacy Revenue Cycle and Central Pharmacy Production and Repackaging Services. The Department of Pharmaceutical Services is fully responsible for the medication use process across the health system. The services provided by pharmacy include, but are not limited to, drug procurement, drug storage and security; safe, accurate and timely preparation and distribution of drugs; clinical pharmacy services for patients; drug information services for clinicians and patients; retail specialty drug pharmacy services; ambulatory care pharmacy services; oversight of sate medication practices; antimicrobial stewardship; pharmacy oncology infusion services; pharmacy revenue cycle; central drug production and distribution with state-of-the-art automation; and development and management of drug use policies and procedures within the Medical Center. The Department is integrated with the Department of Clinical Pharmacy, an academic campus unit within the School of Pharmacy, which has a primary responsibility for teaching professional courses in the PharmD curriculum, research, and public service.
Department of Pharmaceutical Services provides inpatient pharmacy services for Moffitt Long Hospital at Parnassus, Benioff Children’s Hospital in Mission Bay and Mount Zion Hospital. The inpatient pharmacies provide clinical and drug distribution services to the associated clinics and medical offices of each hospital.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree.
  • Three to five (3-5) years of directly related experience.
  • ASHP Accredited Postgraduate Year 1 (PGY1) Pharmacy Residency Program or equivalent practice experience.
  • Broadly encompassing or highly in-depth knowledge of pharmacy practice. Knowledge of controlled terminology, clinical workflows, user interface optimization, clinical decision support, rules development, data integration and mining, clinical ontologies and adoption of technology.
  • In-depth knowledge of all relevant clinical informatics software and systems, and of the highly-complex concepts, principles, policies, methodologies, techniques, best practices, regulations, and standards practices involved with patient care and electronic medical data management in the UC health care system.
  • Intensive knowledge and expertise of pharmaceutical theory in a specialty theory.
  • Knowledge of developments in research and design in area of specialization including new or reformulated products being developed by medical and pharmaceutical researchers.
  • Stays updated on industry trends and best practices in optimizing the use of medication to treat patients. Knowledge of relevant Pharmacy Department, medical center, and UC policies and protocols including medicine storage, safety, and patient privacy and treatment.
  • Advanced analytical skills and expertise in documentation and reporting, with the ability to apply metrics, design and run queries, collect and analyze performance data, and produce sophisticated reports and analyses for management use.
  • Ability to apply advanced problem-resolution skills to highly complex issues, quickly diagnose problems, and develop, test, and implement appropriate and effective solutions in a timely manner.
  • Advanced interpersonal communications skills, to convey highly technical information and instructions to all levels of clinical users in a clear and concise manner, to provide technical support, and to develop and deliver training materials as needed.
  • Advanced ability to serve as a technical leader and information resource, and to work collaboratively with senior staff and management across departments, providing advice, counsel, and analysis on issues of policy, functionality, system efficiency, upgrades, business analytics, and industry advances and trends.
  • Ability to serve as a technical liaison between pharmacy operations, IT and Clinical Systems to support the effective development of application design requirements and implementation of automation, drug distribution systems, analytical tools, and/or clinical applications.
  • Advanced organizational and project management skills, with the ability to lead a team, prioritize tasks, and see projects through from inception to completion on schedule.
  • Ability to develop process maps and workflows to document design requirements for applications, to identify system inefficiencies and/or to identify opportunities to improve efficiencies, productivity and/or reduce cost.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Board of Pharmacy Specialties certification
  • ASHP Accredited Postgraduate Year 2 (PGY2) Pharmacy Informatics Specialty Residency Program or equivalent informatics practice experience

License/Certification

  • Registered Pharmacist (CA Board of Pharmacy) or eligible for licensing on hire
  • Epic Systems certification in one or more medication
  • -use modules (ie. Willow Inpatient, Willow Ambulatory, Willow Inventory, Beacon) or positioned for training and certification on hire
