Pet Grooming Salon Manager

Position Summary:

The Pet Grooming Salon Manager (PGSM) manages the day-to-day operations of Joybound's full-service commercial Grooming Salon. The salon supports Joybound's dog grooming academy and services Joybound's in-house grooming needs. The PGSM supports Joybound's academy as an ad hoc instructor.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

I. Leadership

• Lead by action and example to advance a culture of positivity, professionalism, trust, transparency, empathy, and excellence at Joybound.
• Coach, guide, and train staff and volunteers, providing ongoing direction, example, mentorship, resources, feedback, and accountability to elevate individual and team performance.
• Promote teamwork, communication, and cooperation within the Grooming Salon and with all other departments.

II. Management

• Manage all aspects of a boutique commercial Grooming Salon.
• Interact with the public and Joybound donors, clients, vendors, volunteers, and staff from various departments.
• Inform clients that grooming academy students will be performing the grooming services with the supervision of the instructors.

III. Grooming Salon

• Read dogs' body language; safely handle dogs of all ages.
• Cut and style dogs' hair, using specific techniques to accommodate the needs of breed standards and client preference.
• Bathe dogs using safe handling skills and ensuring proper cleanliness is achieved.
• The PGSM will relay grooming instructions to the instructor(s) and ensure they are met to the client's satisfaction.
• Ensure the salon is clean, presentable, and adequately stocked with grooming supplies.
• Ensure grooming equipment is maintained and serviced properly.
• Ensure the salon's website is performing as it should and that clients are charged appropriately for the services they receive.
• Handle client concerns and complaints.
• Report the daily operation of the salon to the Director, Grooming Academy and Salon and communicate any safety issues, injuries, serious concerns promptly.
• Prioritize grooming requests received from Joybound's Veterinarian Department.
• Assist Joybound staff with identifying in-house dogs for grooming.
• Perform as an ad hoc instructor for the grooming academy, i.e. provide verbal and hands-on instruction to students, draft/enhance lesson material, and assist with the dally operation of the academy.

IV. Other duties as assigned

Physical/Environmental Conditions and Requirements:

• Work environment includes constant exposure to animals and animal allergens.
• Ability to push/pull moderately heavy objects up to 25 pounds.
• Ability to move dogs weighing up to 150 pounds for short distances and humanely restrain animals when necessary.
• Ability to walk dogs weighing up to 150 pounds in a variety of weather conditions.
• Ability to kneel, bend, stoop, squat, reach above and below shoulder level, grasp and turn objects, stand and/or walk frequently and repetitively throughout each shift.
• Ability to flex the neck upward and downward and twist the neck and waist.
• Dexterity to handle animals and small objects.
• Ability to assess medical and behavior changes in animals using a variety of techniques including, but not limited to, visually and audibly.
• Ability to sit for periods of time up to 2 hours using a computer of in other tasks
• Ability to stand for up to three hours grooming dogs.
• Tetanus and rabies inoculations are required or must be waived.

• Minimum of six months' management experience, preferably involving animals.
• Minimum of 2 years' experience grooming a range of dogs and/or cats in a Grooming Salon, veterinary, shelter, boarding facility or formal setting.
• Computer skills to use PowerPoint presentations and word-processing.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Knowledge of various breeds and their characteristics, and familiarity with symptoms of diseases common to dogs, required.
• Ability to provide classroom and hands-on instruction.
• Handles multiple tasks and works well under pressure.
• Ability to supervise, mentor and lead employees.
• Communicates information skillfully and effectively. Ability to comprehend and follow written and/or verbal instructions.
• Affection for animals, concern for their welfare and a willingness to accommodate animals in the workplace.
• Ability to communicate with the public, volunteers, and co-workers in a pleasant, courteous and tactful manner always.
• Demonstrate maturity, good judgment in professional manner and personal appearance.
• Ability to provide first aid to dogs.
• Comfortable and skilled in working with a diverse staff, volunteers, and community.
• Pre-employment background check screening required.

Hours:

Full-time exempt, with a minimum of 40 hours per week, additional hours for events or other activities as appropriate. Daily reporting hours and days of the week may vary according to the needs of the department. Weekend work will be required.

Compensation: $69,000 - $73,000 per year, with comprehensive benefits including paid vacation and holidays, medical, dental, vision care, retirement plan with employer contribution, etc.
