JOB SUMMARY:
Provides counseling services to students to include conducting clinical assessments and performing crisis management.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Conducts clinical assessments.
- Performs short-term personal intervention and crisis management (up to three visits) with/for students and, as necessary, provides appropriate referrals.
- Develops and delivers programs and processes that provide counseling services to students.
- Participates in strategic and operational planning to support achievement of organizational goals.
- Provides counseling and guidance in support of achievement of academic success; leads and initiates programs promoting student success.
- Provides outreach programs to students at risk; may refer students to outside resources for personal, academic or crisis intervention.
- Provides feedback to school leadership to facilitate student success; serves on ad-hoc teams and committees.
- Develops and delivers workshops supporting student success.
- Provides support for special student populations.
- May serve on Strategies of Behavioral Intervention (SOBI) college/district committee.
- May perform all duties inherent in supervision, which includes but is not limited to recommending and/or approving personnel actions, hiring, promotions, transfers, terminations and disciplinary actions. Approving/disapproving leaves, scheduling work assignments and conducting performance evaluations.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Master’s degree in counseling, social work, or a counseling-related field.
- Two years of experience in counseling as a regular/full licensee.
PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Three years of experience in counseling as a regular/full licensee.
- Counseling experience in a community college.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:
Licensed by the state of Texas as a professional counselor (LPC), clinical social worker (LCSW), therapist (LMFT) or psychologist.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of family violence dynamics and related legal issues; community resources for family violence; relevant stages of human growth/development; support services programming; and college procedures/practices.
- Skill in assessing/intervening in crises situations.
- Skill in advocating for student success.
- Skill in utilizing a personal computer and associated software programs.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to meet work schedules and work independently.
- Ability to represent the college effectively in a variety of district and community settings.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, faculty, and the public.
- Must demonstrate initiative, innovation, self-motivation, and the ability to focus on quality and continuous improvement.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: May supervise full and part-time counselors, staff, work study students and interns.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Work is usually performed in an office environment with no exposure to hazardous or unpleasant conditions. Physical demands are usually limited to sitting or standing in one location much of the time. Some stooping, lifting or carrying lightweight objects may be required.
