Job Title: Personal Attendant

Department: Supported Living Services

Reporting Relationship: Program Supervisor or Program Director

Summary of duties and responsibilities:

The Personal Attendants reports directly to the SLS Supervisor/Director and is responsible for the daily care of adults with intellectual disabilities. Duties of a personal attendant include supervising, feeding, and dressing a person who needs assistance due to advanced age, physical disability or mental deficiency. Duties also include but not limited to the following:

Job Duties:

  • Employment Preparation (provide supervision to the individual while acquiring skills necessary for successful employment. This includes supporting the individual with personal appearance/hygiene, screening/application process, building a network preparing a resume, time management, communication, working under direct supervision and safety awareness)
  • Communication Skills (provide supervision to the individual while accessing facilitated communication devices which may include Braille, Sign Language, finder spelling, augmentative devices, development of adaptations as per choice, mannerism, etc. Provide training and supervision on how to use a telephone, cell phone, internet, etc.)
  • Mobility Training (provide supervision and training to the individual on how to access public transportation, familiarizing themselves with bus routes, DMV materials, obtaining bus passes, etc.)
  • Education Training (provide supervision and training on how to enroll in classes, apply for financial aid, school/class selection, maintain attendance, complete assignments, encourage, etc. Training may include parent skills, family life education and sexual education)
  • Money Management (provide supervision and training on how to budget, make change, purchase, count comparisons)
  • Self Help Skills (provide supervision and train individuals in basic hygiene tasks and at times tend to individual with bathing and assist the individual with proper dressing for weather and environment)
  • Environment Awareness and Public Adaptation (provide supervision and training on how to access public professionals safely and confidently, develop natural supports in all settings)
  • Personal and Public Safety Skills (provide supervision and training in recognizing stranger danger safety skills, recognition of safe vs. unsafe environments, street safety skills)
  • Emergency Preparedness (provide supervision and training on how to remain safe in the vent of an emergency such as fire, earthquake, and any other emergency. Promote awareness of the use and purpose of 911 and emergency services)
  • Community Resources Awareness (provide supervision and support in most advantageous access of all possible public/community resources)

  • Health and Fitness (provide supervision, training and support with diet programs, exercise, medical conditions, making healthy food choices, etc.)
  • Health Assistance and Medication (provide supervison and support for invidudal during medical appointments by communicating updates or concerns regarding health and/or medication. Also, provide supervision, training and support to individual with following proper storage, documentation and procedures for medication. Personal attendant will NOT administer medication at any point.)
  • Home Maintenance (provide supervision and training to individual on maintaining a safe and clean-living environment. Also, able to provide support on completing necessary laundry tasks.)
  • Self-Advocacy Skills (provide supervision and support to the individual with becoming aware of their rights, identifying when their rights are being violated, use of legal rights, self-reliance, self- esteem, empowerment, etc.)
  • Living Options (provide supervision and training to individual on making choices on living location, living alone or having roommates, cost of living, etc.)
  • Benefit Planning (provide supervision and training of individual while accessing Medi-Cal benefits, applying for SSI, Medi-Cal, assist and train the individual how to make appointments, cancel appointments, attend appointments, immigration/citizen process, etc.)
  • Shopping Skills (provide supervision and support with shopping for groceries in the community.

Personal attendant will support individual in making healthy food choices and assist with budgeting and price comparison)

Safety:

  • Report Special Incident (SIR) according to Regional Center and All Around Program Services’ policy and procedures.
  • Ensure that the individual receives professional, quality services in a safe and meaning manner.
  • Assist with the transferring of the individual from wheelchair to vehicle, restroom, bed and vice/versa when, and if necessary.
  • Must have back pack and company ID badge with you at all times
  • Follow proper emergency procedures while maintain the safety of the individual at all times.
  • Practice safe driving while abiding to the California laws such as speed limits, pulling over to text or make/take a call.
  • Supervision and devote your time to the individual(s) at all times including while on various outings.

Programming:

  • Participate in development of the individual program plan (IPP), and or individual service plan

(ISP) and or individual educational plan (IEP)

  • Monitors services and individuals progress in relationship to establish goals and objectives per individuals plans
  • Provide supervision and training as outlined in the individual’s IPP, ISP, and or IEP.
  • Attends team meetings or other training as part of the continuation of education or any agency- wide training and in-service programs

  • Participates or provides information in individuals quarterly/semi-annual and annual meetings
  • Research and plan activities for each of your individual(s) according to their goals/objectives in the ISP, IEP and IPP.

Communication:

  • Communicate with supervisor during normal business hours regarding questions and concerns related to employment, hours, rates, individual’s family, program, etc.
  • Communicate all emergencies and/or call-offs immediately to the department On-Call phone
  • Must have a working cell phone at all times and it must be ON during work hours
  • Must respond to management within a reasonable amount of times during work hours via call or text

Other duties and responsibilities:

  • Must perform other related duties and assignments as required
  • At least 6 months direct supervision in the field of working with individuals with developmental disabilities population
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret general regulations
  • Ability to write legible and accurate notes relating to an individual’s goals/objectives
  • Shall have a valid certificate of training in first aid/CPR, CPI
  • Possess a Hight School Diploma/GED
  • Shall have a fingerprint, criminal clearance record; shall have on record a TB screening clearance
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions to the consumer, circle of support, Regional Center and/or general public
  • Able to speak English and any language based on the individuals needs
  • Ability to use independent judgment during services and emergencies
  • Possess a cell phone to be used to communicate with management and complete payroll responsibilities (view schedule, submit Time=Off request, punch in/out, and other duties)
  • Posses a valid CA Driver’s License, verification of vehicle insurance with your name listed as a driver and vehicle registration
  • To perform other related duties and assignments as required

Work Schedule:

Employment Classification: Non-Exempt Hourly

Employment Status: Part-Time (29 hrs/wk or less) /Full-Time (30 hrs/wk or more)

Monday-Friday: Varies (based on availability)

Saturday and Sunday: Varies (based on availability)

Holidays/After Office Hours: Varies (based on availability)

Physical Environment/Working Area:

Reports to and works out of the private home of the clients and/or out in the community
