Summary:

The Perioperative Aide facilitates patient transportation to the OR in a safe, efficient and organized manner. He/she effects and controls sanitation in the OR rooms and perioperative area. The Perioperative Aide, under supervision and/or according to established guidelines assists with the smooth operation of the Anesthesia Department by maintaining and providing equipment and supplies in inventory and to anesthetizing locations.
Experience/Education Requirements:
  • High school diploma equivalent.
  • Completion of RMC mandatory inservices, upon hire and yearly.
  • Completion of 2-4 weeks minimum basic OR orientation within the OR department and continued with preceptors.
  • On the job training.
License or Certification Requirements:
Current CPR certification training or obtainment within 6 months of hiring preferred.

Responsibilities:

  • Orders coffee and cafeteria supplies.
  • Responds to pages/phone calls in a timely manner and reports to the desk facilitator efficiently.
  • A ssists OR staff with patient lifting and positioning and transfer to and from the OR.
  • A ssumes responsibility for acquisition and proper storage of cleaning supplies.
  • Assumes responsibility for cleaning equipment and ordering of supplies.
  • A ttends unit meetings, daily huddles and reading the communication book.
  • C hecks operating room suites for adequate furniture, supplies, equipment, restocking as necessary
  • R emoves excess equipment and return to appropriate location after cases and at the end of the day.
  • C lean anesthesia equipment between cases and at the end of the day.
  • C leans scrub sinks daily, restocking supplies as needed.
  • E mpties wastebaskets, linen hampers and mop containers throughout the day to prevent overflow. COntacts EVS to remove excess waste in the soiled utility room.
  • E mpties and refills mop buckets in the prescribed manner. Ensures there are enough mop heads for the day and contacts Linen as needed.
  • R estock/refill any necessary solutions for the cleaning room.
  • Restocks turnover cart daily and removes any expired items.
  • F ills blanket warmers throughout the day alongside EVS. Ensures the carts are covered at all times.
  • Maintains and organizes inventory of anesthesia supplies/drugs/equipment.
  • Maintains stock supply in anesthesia machines and carts in OR rooms, OB and IR/SPL and IRU.
  • Maintains clear hallways by keeping equipment on one side to allow for emergency pathways.
  • Maintains surgeion and nursing lounge neatness and cleanliness throughout the day and in the evenings.
  • Observes and reports pertinent patient information to the charge nurse/OR Manager.
  • Utilizes the "CUS" acronym and observes and reports pertinent patient information to the charge nurse or circulating RN. Ensures patient safety is the primary priority.
  • Obtains operating room schedule/board, anticipates needs and helps setup operating room for respective cases, including emergency and add on cases. Review OR rooms for "high priority" turnovers.
  • Regularly cleans anesthesia workroom area, anesthesia gas machines, storage carts and equipment.
  • Replaces Sharp Containers as needed and contacts EVS for pick up.
  • Restocks scrub supplies and masks, solution bottles at scrub sinks, responsible for monthly assignments, damp dusting.
  • Restock sterile water and saline bottles to the warners and cart throughout the day.
  • Retrieves blood from blood bank and uses cooler for transport. Verifies the patient information.
  • Retrieves pharmacy orders from pharmacy.
  • Returns transport carts to the PACU/OPS area after use, cleans with prescribed disinfectant and replace with clean sheet, pillow and blanket.
  • Sets up rooms every morning and damp dusts all flat surfaces including the bed before the first case.
  • Transports specimens to the lab throughout the day in a timely manner. Verifies the "OR-Specimen" sticker is places on all containers except culturettes.
  • Turns over rooms between cases; terminally clean OR rooms. Understands the importance of "High Priority turn over" vs "Stat" turnover.
  • Understands isolation precautions and protocols with the proper use of gowning and gloving and the use of the isolation cart and proper signage.
  • Works collaboratively with entire OR team to ensure safe patient care and open communication while maintaining a positive and professional attitude.
  • Views constructive criticism as means to improve their skills and behaviors allowing for professional growth.
  • Adheres to policies and procedures and maintains up to date on changes.
  • Supportive of changes related to process improvement.
  • Actively participates in staff discussions by providing solutions and suggestions to improve processes.
  • Promotes "One Riverside" in discussions about team work.
  • Understands and utilizes the error reporting system is not punitive, but a tool to promote process improvement.
  • Prepare for Aline and Hotlines every night.
  • Complete outdates for department.
  • Understands that the role is not limited to what is listed in the job descriptions and that team work is defined by doing whatever is necessary to promote efficiencies and provide safe patient care.

Blood and Body Fluids: There is extreme potential to blood and body fluids when cleaning equipment at the end of a surgical procedure. All patients are considered infectious and the OR follows universal precautions on all procedures, greatly reducing the risk to the OR personnel.
TB or Airborne Pathogens: There is extreme potential for exposure to airborne pathogens. The OR follows universal precautions on all cases thus greatly reducing the risk to the OR personnel.
Sensory requirements (speech, vision, smell, hearing, touch):
Speech: Required to communicate with surgeons, anesthesia personnel, patients and co-workers.
Vision: Required to safely transport patients on carts or in wheelchairs to the OR. Necessary to inspect rooms after cleaning to insure safe environment for succeeding patients.
Smell: Helpful to note presence of electrical/fire safety.
Hearing: Necessary to hear patient's concerns, hear families' concerns, hear intercom for help in a room, hear call for turnover, hear alarms (fire, etc).
Touch: Needed to operate controls of equipment.

Mop buckets filled and lifted from the sink at waist level and lowered to floor. Transport patients from bed to cart after surgery involves lifting. Specimen containers are transported from OR on a tray and carried to Lab approximately 200-400'. X-ray folders may weigh 5-15 lbs. Bags of clean mop head and rags folded are carried from laundry. Garbage bags, dirty mop heads and trash bags.
