As a member of the healthcare team, the coding professional will support the importance of accurate, complete and consistent coding practice for the production of quality healthcare data. The Certified Inpatient Medical Coder should be proficient in coding the most complex types of coding (inpatient) or proficient in coding all the different visit types or specialties. The Certified Inpatient Medical Coder will assist with the education of clinicians or providers by advocating proper documentation. The Certified Inpatient Medical Coder will strive for optimal reimbursement and will have the ability to float to different coding areas as needed.

This position is Per Diem. Employees are required to work any 2 shifts per pay period and to work any shift within the normal business hours of 6:00 AM - 8:00 PM CST.

We offer weeks of paid remote training. The hours of training will be based on your schedule or will be discussed on your first day of employment. Training will be conducted virtually from your home.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Primary duty is to determine the appropriate International Classification of Diseases ICD 10 - CM / PCS by reviewing the electronic medical record thoroughly to assign all necessary codes and modifiers using official coding guidelines and Coding Clinics.
  • Will have the ability to code the most complex and acutely ill types of patients.
  • Will have the ability to code medical and surgical types of cases. 
  • Is able to code encounters of multiple specialties.
  • Research optimal reimbursement from each account while monitoring accurate coding and selection of sequencing.
  • Assigns appropriate DRG / APC reimbursement based on documentation in the medical record.
  • Abstracts appropriate information into the computer system, utilizing specified guidelines
  • Communicates with physicians and other clinicians regarding needed documentation on a given record.
  • Has the ability to do coding quality audits as necessary for quality measures.
  • Assists in the identification of quality issues, reporting them to HIM management.
  • Works closely with the Clinical Documentation team.
  • Increases knowledge and skills of coding while adhering to established job standard.
  • Maintains knowledge of coding processes, reimbursement systems, Clinical Documentation Management Program (CDMP), and procedures.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of policies and procedures to contribute to the efficiency of the HIM, Coding department.
  • Participates in continuing education activities.  
  • Reviews trends and developments in medicine, disease processes, technology, coding practices.
  • Applies new information, changes in procedure and feedback as relayed by the department leaders.
  • Participates positively and actively in department.
  • Will perform other job duties as necessary.

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma / GED
  • 4 years of hospital coding experience 
  • 4 years of experience with working in an EMR system  
  • Must have 1 of the following certifications: CCS, CCA, RHIT, RHIA
  • Ability to work Per Diem, 2 shifts per pay period, and ability to work any shift within the normal business hours of 6:00 AM - 8:00 PM CST
  • Must be 18 years of age OR older

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Health Information Management
  • EPIC experience 

Telecommuting Requirements:

  • Ability to keep all company sensitive documents secure (if applicable)
  • Required to have a dedicated work area established that is separated from other living areas and provides information privacy
  • Must live in a location that can receive a UnitedHealth Group approved high-speed internet connection or leverage an existing high-speed internet service

California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Washington, or Rhode Island Residents Only: The hourly range for California / Colorado / Connecticut / Hawaii / Nevada / New York / New Jersey / Washington / Rhode Island residents is $19.47 - $38.08 per hour.
