Job Description:

The College Advising Corps in Pennsylvania places recent college graduates in partner high schools to serve as full-time College Advisers for two year terms. The College Advising Corps in Pennsylvania empowers low-income, first-generation college, and underrepresented high school students to identify and pursue higher education opportunities. COVID-19's impact on underserved communities is a constant reminder that higher education is the surest path to economic mobility.

College Advisers guide high school students and their families through the postsecondary planning process through one-on-one advising and group meetings. Advisers work closely with school counselors, teachers, principals, and community leaders to build strong partnerships.  Advisers collaborate with school staff to plan and execute financial aid nights, FAFSA  completion events, college application initiatives, career exploration events, college field trips, college representative visits, and a senior Decision Day celebration.

Being an Adviser requires strong commitments to service and the value of a postsecondary  education. Advisers must demonstrate the ability to communicate ideas clearly, listen carefully, work independently, and build strong relationships with multiple stakeholders.

Advisers serve in school communities across the state of Pennsylvania. We have an immediate vacancy for a high school in Dauphin County & Cambria County for a start date of January 2024.

Essential Functions:

College Advising Corps advisers will be expected to tailor services and programs to meet the specific needs of their assigned high schools, in an effort to increase college-going rates and  perform the following duties:

  • Provide mentorship and guidance to any student or family seeking assistance.
    •  Through individualized, holistic advising, interact with students daily to provide relevant information on the higher education experience, the college/university admissions process, and pertinent career opportunities.
    • Help students complete college applications, financial aid forms, scholarship materials, and job applications.
  • Organize and promote events that encourage students and families to consider post secondary educational opportunities.
    • Host classroom presentations, workshops, and assemblies around different aspects of the college-going process.
    •  Plan field trips to colleges and job opportunities.
    • Host college application completion activities.
    •  Conceptualize and implement a senior Decision Day
  • Establish positive and productive relationships within each assigned high school and the  administrative team.
    • In consultation with the College Advising Corps in Pennsylvania administrative  team, assess the particular needs of each school and execute strategies to meet  these needs.
      • Note: With the exception of our one cyber partner high school, all partner high schools expect Advisers to work in-person when school is in session.
    • Connect and communicate regularly with on-site supervisor and other counseling and administrative personnel.
    • Integrate within the broader school community to establish mutual trust.
  • Demonstrate administrative and data management skills.

    • Submit weekly reports to the PCAC administrative team, documenting progress on goals, successes, and challenges.
    • Collect and analyze data on key performance indicators to help inform decision making and goals.
    • Complete information requests from the College Advising Corps in Pennsylvania administrative team and College Advising Corps National Office.
    • Represent College Advising Corps to stakeholders and potential supporters  through donor luncheons, information sessions, and networking events.
    • Be proactive in designing initiatives to increase the school's college-going culture.
    • Utilize strong time management and organizational skills.
  • Maintain expertise in college access, admissions, and financial aid advising.
    • Participate in a 4-week summer training before beginning service at assigned high school(s).
    • Attend monthly in-service trainings and bi-weekly conference calls.
