JOB TITLE: Peer Support Specialist - SA

JOB CLASSIFICATION:SA Peer Support Specialist

SALARY RANGE Range 6

REPORTS TO: Project Supervisor

SUMMARY: Under close supervision and as a member of a multi-disciplinary team, assists with the care and treatment of persons with serious mental illness and Substance Use disorders. The primary focus/location of service delivery will be consumers spend their time – home, community, etc.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Ability to provide and document the following services: Crisis Intervention and Resolution, Family Support and Education, Basic Living Skills, Peer Support Skills.

2. Participates in direct care services as instructed by supervisor by providing the above noted services in a manner consistent with the Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) Team philosophy.

3. Monitors and reports behavioral observations.

4. Responsible for the storage and protection of consumer records.

5. Performs other reasonable, related duties as assigned by the immediate

Supervisor and other management personnel.

DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

1. Ability to understand and follow oral or written instructions.

2. Flexibility; experience within a team concept; ability to organize, schedule, communicate, and monitor.

3. Ability to perform tasks independently.

4. Must demonstrate the ability to work well with staff and clients in a polite, respectful and dignified manner.

5. An understanding of recovery from Substance Use disorder.

6. Basic understanding of Substance Use disorder and the system of care.

7. Basic knowledge of empowerment and the goals and objectives of the consumer movement.

8. Ability to:

-Communicate effectively

-Connect with individuals who have a Substance Use disorder.

-Understand the unique experience of persons struggling with a Substance Use disorder.

- Relay coping skills, positive attitude skills and self-esteem.

-Facilitate Peer Support/self-help groups.

QUALIFICATIONS:

*Have a minimum of 2 years of continuous demonstrated recovery time from a Substance Use disorder at the date of application.

*Willing to self-identify as a person in recovery for the benefit of others.

*High School Diploma/GED

*Valid Alabama Driver’s License

*Completion of Alabama Department of Mental Health approved Alabama Certified *Recovery Support Peer Specialist.

*Two written references that attest to appropriateness for certification.

*Pass exam with a minimum score of 70.
