JOB SUMMARY: A Certified Peer Support Specialist (CPSS) is an individual with a lived experience and journey in receiving public mental health services and supports. A Peer Support Specialist is an individual who possesses a unique perspective to treatment, due to his/her own experience with serious and persistent mental illness. The Peer Support Specialist draws from his/her personal growth experience to carry the message of hope and recovery to the people we serve in outpatient settings. Much of this support is offered in a coaching/mentoring manner, where the Peer Support Specialist cultivates and secures a connection with the person served, while teaching personal responsibility and serving as a mentor and role model on the recovery and wellness process. The Peer Support will interact, support and mentor individuals who are working toward their own recovery and will be an essential member of multi-disciplinary treatment teams. The Peer Support Specialist may be involved in program development and training of direct support staff and other team members.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Regular and predictable attendance is an essential requirement of this position.
Support and promote a recovery focused environment. Use experiences with personal recovery to offer hope, encouragement and reassurance to the people served within the program.
Participate as assigned in clinical and staff meetings, and serve on other organizational committees as clinically appropriate.
Participate in the person centered planning process as requested by the people that we serve.
Work with program leadership to implement programmatic changes by utilizing evidence based practices (ex. Trauma Informed Care) to improve the quality of our services and outcomes.
Assist the people we serve to become active participants in their treatment and encourage self-advocacy, wellness and recovery.
Document interactions in the electronic medical record and coordinate with other treatment team members as necessary.
In individual and group settings, provide services aimed at promoting independence, community inclusion and productivity. Services offered will include but are not limited to: Assistance in applying for benefits, assistance in finding and maintaining housing, budgeting skills, Wellness Recovery Action Plan, care coordination and medical advocacy and follow up after psychiatric hospitalizations.
Work as part of the interdisciplinary team to provide the best possible care and/or treatment for each individual.
Schedule and lead group programming. Complete the appropriate group paperwork required within the program.
QUALIFICATIONS (Education and Experience):
High School Diploma or Equivalent. Must have a primary diagnosis of mental illness a current of former consumer of public mental health service, must demonstrate leadership and advocacy skills and a strong dedication to recovery.
Certified or willing to become certified as a Certified Peer Support Specialist within the first 6 months or less of employment.

SKILLS AND SPECIFICATIONS:
Ability to effectively speak, write and understand the English language.
Ability to speak and understand a language other than English, is preferred.
Effective written and verbal communication.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with elected officials,
Administrators, Department Heads, staff, union officials and the public.
Ability to conduct oneself with tact and courtesy.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Works in an office environment and uses a computer, telephone and other office equipment as needed, to perform duties. The noise level in the work environment is typical of that of an office with frequent contact with customers.
Bends, stoops and reaches in order to file, search for and retrieve records and documents.
Manual dexterity and regular fine-finger and hand/wrist motions are required for operating a keyboard, writing and filing.
Seeing (vision), sitting, talking/speaking, or listening/hearing are regularly required.
Operates an automobile while performing assigned job duties
