JOB SUMMARY:

Northwestern Medical Center’s (NMC) Department of Inpatient Pediatrics is seeking board certified Advanced Practice Provider (Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, Family Nurse Practitioner, or Physician assistant) with appropriate training to join the team in St. Albans, Vermont.

The inpatient pediatric service cares for patients at the Family Birth Center which includes labor & delivery, post-partum care, and general inpatient pediatric patients. The pediatric service providers direct patient care for newborns through adolescents. Duties include care for newborn infants in Level 1 nursery, pediatric patient consultation and co-management in the emergency department including assistance with stabilization prior to transfer to tertiary care center, day to day management of hospitalized general pediatric patients, collaboration with outpatient primary care providers and community partners. Clinical responsibilities include attendance at high risk deliveries, attendance at cesarean sections, resuscitation of newborns, care of healthy newborns, care for infants with hyperbilirubinemia, feeding difficulties/failure to thrive, rule out sepsis, respiratory distress including transient tachypnea of newborn, infants requiring CPAP for stabilization; following Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) guidelines procedures may include: umbilical central lines, lumbar punctures, intubations, and emergent needle decompression of pneumothorax. General pediatric inpatients common diagnoses include but not limited to respiratory distress requiring non-invasive ventilatory support, volume depletion requiring IV hydration, infections with need for IV antibiotics, or observation and care coordination prior to discharge.  
 
Responsibilities will include direct patient care, as well as opportunities for education of staff (registered nurses, respiratory therapists, advanced practice students), quality and process improvement, and multi-disciplinary team collaboration. This position is solely inpatient. Hours will include primary coverage shifts between 12 and 24 hours. In addition, attendance at pediatric service meetings, pediatric provider staff meetings, and other administrative duties as a team member of the inpatient pediatric service.

Qualifications:  

  • Must have completed an NP-focused graduate master’s or doctoral nursing program, and successfully pass a national NP board certification exam. 
  • OR Must have completed a PA graduate program and successfully pass a national PA board certification exam.  
  • Licensed/license-eligible to practice in Vermont. 
  • Minimum of 2-4 years direct clinical experience preferred.  
  • PALS and NRP certified.  
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and critical thinking skills.
