Overview

 

The NP/PA is a clinician who demonstrates clinical expertise and leadership skills. The NP/PA uses clinical and academic acumen in the evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of patients with cancer.

Responsibilities

In collaboration with a physician, the NP/PA manages therapeutic regimens as well as acute and chronic problems related to the patient's underlying disease, treatment and/or comorbid conditions. The NP/PA in this position will be working with pediatric oncology and stem cell transplant patients and will provide clinical care coverage when NP/PA staff are on a leave of absence. The NP/PA provides anticipatory guidance, patient and family education, and psychological and emotional support. The NP/PA has prescriptive authority which includes schedule II through V controlled substances in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, as well as chemotherapy.

 

The NP/PA is an integral member of an interdisciplinary care team, partnering with physicians and other team members. This requires effective communication and collaboration with co-workers at the Institute, in addition to collaborating institutions and agencies. The role requires critical thinking, an understanding of research principles and practices, and leadership that improves the quality of care and advances nursing/medical care within the work setting and throughout the community. The NP/PA takes advantage of formal and informal learning opportunities to strengthen his or her knowledge base in support of the Institute's Mission, Vision and Core Values.

Qualifications

NP Qualifications:

 

  • Authorization to practice in an expanded role as a Nurse Practitioner in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
  • Current certification from a nationally recognized accrediting body approved by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing for Nurse Practitioners
  • Minimum of 24 contact hours beyond generic education in pharmacotherapeutics
  • Master's degree in nursing
  • Minimum of 2-years in pediatric oncology nursing experience or 1 - year Nurse Practitioner experience preferred in pediatric oncology
  • In possession of Massachusetts Department of Public Health and Federal DEA numbers
  • Certification in Oncology Nursing preferred - OCN, AOCN, CPON, CPHON, BMTCN
  • PALS certification

    PA Qualifications:

    • NCCPA certified
    • Graduate of AAPA/NCCPA accredited Physician Assistant Studies Program
    • License as a Physician Assistant in Massachusetts
    • Maintain current DEA and Massachusetts Controlled Substances Registration
    • Complete 100 hours of CME according to national and stats regulations during each 2 years period of employment
    • PALS certification
