Job description

Broad Function

SCHEDULE
40 hours/week - Wednesday through Sunday, 8pm - 4am, 9 Months
Incumbents in this class perform security and law enforcement related functions at SUNY-Adirondack which include responsibility for maintaining order, for the enforcement of New York State Laws, for the security of College property, and for the safety of students, visitors and staff. The incumbent exercises powers as granted to Peace Officers by the laws of the State of New York and such supplementary powers as may be conferred by the SUNY Adirondack Board of Trustees that are consistent with law. The work is performed under the general supervision of a higher level supervisor with some latitude allowed for the exercise of independent judgment in carrying out assignments. The incumbent will perform all related duties as required.

Major Responsibilities

  • Maintains order on campus at all times;
  • Performs security work, fire prevention and law enforcement;
  • Patrols building, grounds and parking areas on foot or in a patrol vehicle to maintain order, protect persons and property, control traffic, provide first aid and to prevent trespassing, theft or damage;
  • Investigates complaints as required;
  • Secures and checks all doors, windows and entrances to buildings as required;
  • Assures that all doors and entrances are unlocked for daily activities and classes as required;
  • Directs and controls traffic on campus roads, grounds and parking areas as required;
  • Investigates motor vehicle accidents that occur on campus or campus property as required;
  • Issues parking tickets and Uniform Traffic Citations where authorized and appropriate;
  • Enforces the College’s student conduct and disciplinary procedures;
  • Enforces NY State and local laws and makes arrests for violations of law as authorized and needed;
  • Assists motorists, e.g. lock-outs, dead batteries and other vehicular problems;
  • Gives directions and provides information to students and visitors;
  • Contacts snow removal contractor/grounds crew when necessary;
  • Provides reports and maintains an appropriate system of records and reports;
  • Conducts lost and found activities as appropriate;
  • Appears in court to testify, provide information, and present evidence;
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Supervisor, Assistant Director or Director of Facilities and Public Safety.

Required Skills

Good knowledge of security practices, public safety and security patrol procedures required to ensure maintenance of order and security of buildings, grounds and equipment; working knowledge of NYS Vehicle and Traffic Law and all other applicable laws, ordinances, regulations, policies and procedures used in Public Safety activities; good knowledge of safety precautions necessary to eliminate existing and potential security, safety and fire hazards; good knowledge of the geography of the SUNY
Adirondack Campus, including property, buildings, grounds and facilities; working knowledge of NYS Vehicle and Traffic Law and all other applicable laws, ordinances, regulations, policies and procedures used in Public Safety activities; working knowledge of investigative techniques; ability to communicate effectively with others; ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written directions; ability to prepare clear, concise reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, and the general public; ability to maintain composure and make rational judgments under stressful conditions; ability to drive an automobile and operate emergency equipment; good judgment, tact, courtesy, resourcefulness, and dependability; good powers of observation and memory; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

Educational Requirements

Graduation from High School or possession of a high school equivalency diploma.
Additional Requirements

  • United States Citizenship;
  • Possession of a valid New York State Operator's license at the time of appointment and maintenance of such license throughout the tenure of employment in the position;
  • Eligibility to obtain a firearms license pursuant to Section 400 of the New York State Penal Law;
  • A Campus Public Safety Officer designated as a Peace Officer must successfully complete an approved Municipal Police Training Council Training Program for Campus Public Safety Officer as described in Section 2.30 of Criminal Procedure Law within one year of the date of appointment and maintain such certification at all times thereafter for the duration of employment

**This position is a Competitive Class position subject to all regulations of the Warren County Department of Civil Service. There is an active certified eligible list of candidates. **
