Department Mission: The Financial Services Department serves as a trusted steward of public resources with integrity and accountability to ensure a fiscally sound city.
Position Overview: The Payroll Technician, under general supervision, is the team member in the Payroll Division that will greet all customers when they arrive in the Payroll Office. This position will also answer the phone and email and help customers with their payroll questions. This position will also file personnel documents for employees working at the City of Austin.

Travel: If you are selected for this position and meet the Driver Safety Standards in the City of Austin Driver Safety Program, you may drive when necessary to multiple locations as part of your regular job duties. Otherwise, you are responsible for getting to and from these locations.

Pay Range
$20.80 – $22.88

Hours
Monday-Friday: 7:45 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. – Telework opportunities may be available after an initial training period. Work schedules are implemented to meet the requirements of the department and are subject to change based on business needs. This position will be required to work in the office Wednesday and Thursday, and hybrid schedule for the remainder of the week.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience and/or ability to greet walk-in customers, explain payroll policies and procedures by phone, email or in person, and distribute mail and faxes.
  • Experience and/or ability to file personnel documents and perform other clerical duties such as creating new hire files and entering address changes.
  • Experience and/or ability to complete other duties as assigned.

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities
Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

  • Performs front desk duties for the payroll office, including greet walk-in customers, answer phone calls, and distribute payroll mail and faxes.
  • Enters employee information into the payroll system for withholding, payroll deductions, address changes and direct deposit.
  • Maintains security and confidentiality by following internal control policies and procedures.
  • Secures confidential information and maintains historical records and files.
  • Serves as back-up to Payroll Specialists.
  • Researches and analyzes information as requested or needed; responds to requests for information reprints.
  • Writes and creates memos and reports as requested or needed.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.

  • Knowledge of good customer relations practices.
  • Knowledge of basic office and/or clerical procedures and equipment.
  • Knowledge of business English and business correspondence sufficient to compose and prepare letters, reports, etc.
  • Knowledge of data entry and retrieval methods
  • Knowledge of data base procedures, capabilities and limitations.
  • Skill in operating a computer and using standard business software.
  • Skill in understanding and following verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish work priorities to ensure completion of job tasks within a specified time frame.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other City employees and the public.
