Job description

Position: Patrol EMT-Local

Location: Anchorage, Alaska

Division: Anchorage Safety Patrol/Center (ASP/C)

Reports To: Operations Supervisor

OVERVIEW:

The Patrol EMT is a key member of the Anchorage Safety Patrol (ASP) team, responsible for responding to calls involving individuals incapacitated by substance use. This position requires a certified EMT who is skilled in emergency medical care, nonviolent de-escalation techniques, and compassionate service delivery. The Patrol EMT works alongside a trained driver to safely transport clients to the Anchorage Safety Center (ASC), ensuring the highest level of care and respect.

The Center EMT is also a key member of the Anchorage Safety Patrol (ASP), responsible for monitoring individuals incapacitated by substance use. The requirements are the same as the Patrol EMT.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Client Care: Provide medical assessment and care to incapacitated individuals in the field, according to the policies and procedures and Standing Medical Orders.
  • Safe Transport: Assist in the safe transport of individuals to the ASC or medical facilities, ensuring that all clients are handled with care and dignity.
  • Equipment and Vehicle Inspection: Ensure that the ASP vehicle and medical equipment are inspected and in a safe, clean, and operational condition at all times.
  • De-escalation and Support: Employ nonviolent de-escalation techniques to manage challenging situations with clients, ensuring a safe environment for both clients and staff.
  • Documentation: Accurately document client information and reports per the policies and procedures. Maintain confidentiality and compliance with HIPAA and other regulations.
  • Training and Development: Participate in required training and certification courses to maintain up-to-date skills and knowledge related to the role.
  • Team Collaboration: Work closely with all co-workers to ensure the smooth operation of the ASP/C. Participate in staff meetings and training sessions as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Current State of Alaska EMT Certification (EMT I or higher).
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work effectively with a diverse client population.
  • Commitment to work compassionately with individuals affected by substance use, mental health issues, and homelessness.
  • Basic computer skills for data entry and reporting.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, potentially stressful environment with individuals in crisis.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience working with individuals affected by substance use, mental health issues, and homelessness.
  • Training in trauma-informed care, de-escalation techniques, and CPR/First Aid certification.
  • Knowledge of local community resources and services for individuals experiencing homelessness, substance use disorders, and mental health issues.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Capability to perform physical tasks such as assisting clients, perform medical interventions, and moving supplies.
  • Ability to work in various weather conditions and environments.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screen, tuberculosis (TB) test, and background check.
