Job Summary
This position is to maintain the most effective enforcement of Federal and State Laws and ordinances for the preservation of public peace, protection of property, prevention of crime, and the arrest and conviction of violators. This is a law enforcement position with arrest powers. Work is performed in accordance with prescribed regulations and is reviewed by a supervisor through conferences, reports and a performance review.
Essential Responsibilities
The following duties are typical for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
  • Enforce all laws and ordinances with respect to the Federal and State statutes and County ordinances.
  • Adequately and carefully patrol the areas assigned, and to familiarize themselves with those areas.
  • Conduct investigations of accidents and criminal investigation of a crime scene and protect the crime scene, if needed, until relieved of such duty.
  • Prepare accurate and concise accident and complaint reports.
  • Assist local peace officers in their enforcement activities.
  • Render first aid to accident victims, gather evidence, prepare reports and restore, as quickly as possible, the traffic handling ability of the roads involved.
  • Testify in court on criminal and civil matters.
  • Operate alcohol-detecting equipment.
  • Maintain radio and/or telephone contact with the Department and inform dispatch of location and reason upon leaving the squad.
  • Assist motorists in trouble.
  • Provide assistance during various special events, including traffic direction, crowd control and security.
  • Ability to work various shifts, including holidays and weekends.
  • Peripheral Duties:
  • Assist in jail operations as needed.
  • Type supplemental reports as necssary.
  • Tag car kill deer.
  • Performs other related duties as required or assigned.
  • Transport inmates to and from medical appointments, health care facilities, court appearances, etc.
  • Serve process papers and warrants.

Qualifications
U.S. Citizen;
No felony convictions;
No domestic abuse convictions;
Valid Wisconsin driver's license with good driving record;
Good verbal and written communication skills;
Residency Requirement:
Residency must be within a reasonable response time per the discretion of the Sheriff.
Education:
High school diploma or GED supplemented by a 2-yr Associate's Degree in Police Science or greater OR a minimum of sixty (60) college credits from an accredited university or college.
Must be eligible for Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board certification OR current LESB certification as a Law Enforcement Officer required
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Proficient in the use of sidearms, police rifles, batons, chemical agents, portable radio, and handcuffs.
Proficient in the operation of a patrol car, mobile radio, speed detection equipment, emergency equipment, measuring devices, video camera if so equipped, and transport restraints.
Ability to read and use county and state maps.
Knowledge of county roads and highway systems.
Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relations with fellow officers and the public.
Ability to demonstrate leadership and sympathy in a wide variety of public crises.
Courage and good judgement.
Knowledge of Wisconsin vehicle and criminal law, Wisconsin Juvenile Code; proper procedures of arrest, search and seizure; first aid techniques, report preparation skills, basic vehicle mechanics and driving skills; and appropriate courtroom procedures.
Ability to communicate and react properly using common sense under normal, as well as pressure, situations and to get along well with others.
